VU Meters: Let's See 'Em!!

I'm just too ole school, digital graphs don't make if for me.
I need a big of analog VU meter with a needle.

Actually, I don't either. But, was in the process of using the USB interface with the laptop to connect to my amp to check some settings so i nabbed a quick screen snip to post in this thread. Back in the late 1970s, I had this VU meter from Radio Shack. I think it was normally about $19.99 and I bought it when it was on sale for $9.99. Now, on Ebay, they're fetching about $150. Not sure what happened to mine.

I have two of these old Nagras – a 4.2 and a 4L – which IMO are some of the sexiest industrial design ever. Both beautiful, functional and they have cute meters! I admit I don't have a whole lot of use for them – although they both work fine – but I do take them out once in while just to fondle the knobs and switches. They just feel so satisfying! I'd dearly love a stereo IV-S but they are still seriously spendy.

Here's a fun little VU meter project I just finished. I bought one of those 40 dollar piece of dogshit Douk meters in a plastic box, stripped out the innards and remounted them in a 1/2 wide 1 RU enclosure that I machined out to fit the gauges just exactly perfect, and plumbed it alongside the other 1/2 wide slot into a DX7 Pro mounted to a modified shelf from Benchmark, and slapped that puppy on my desk. I originally had it in line with a KTB and Atom, but it made the sound absolutely horrible, so I went a different route and cleaned it up with a DX7 Pro. Since I am not listening through the Douk, who cares what it sounds like as long as I can output signal to it via RCA at the same time as playing through my headphones. Thats a nice little feature of the DX7 Pro, being able to output to different pathways simultaneously. Fun little desktop project I used to kill time during the pandemic. I tried posting a video, but site wouldn't allow it. A pic will have to do. Cheers!
