Hi staticV3,

You are right, will probably do so.

Just wanted to save some time and not "reinvent the wheel" - in case someone had measured this before.

I'm using 5 minis for multiroom music distribution using Tidal streaming connect as input to the group. This works quite well when it works, but pretty often one of them will just stop playing. It's still shown as in the group and the signal strength is fine and all the others are playing fine. Removing the silent one from the group and making it the target for TIdal connect always works and never drops. I'm waiting for approval to join the Wiim forums so I can ask there.

Apparently they've got some kind of software issue with multiroom streaming.

Have you submitted a ticket to WiiM so they can look at your device logs and perhaps identify the issue?

I just got into the forums and put my question there. I was wondering if anyone on ASR had seen this.

It's hard to say because the email system has been down here this week, so nobody would have received a notification from your reply outside of looking at the bell icon here on the forums. But since I did receive an email about this reply, hopefully somebody else can chime in.

Question:
They say you can plug in two pairs of speakers on the WIIM amp but there’s only one pair of speakers connectors?

WiiM support says "
Regarding your inquiry about speaker configurations with the WiiM Amp:

For 8-Ohm Speakers: You can connect up to four speakers in parallel to a single WiiM Amp. This setup is ideal for maximizing the Amp's capacity while ensuring optimal performance.

For 4-Ohm Speakers: We recommend connecting only two speakers to one WiiM Amp."

how many speakers for WiiM

A bit of caution is required. 8 Ohm speakers are usually not so across the entire audio frequency range. Putting speakers in parallel across the same terminal comes with some risk. Frankly, I'm surprised this is offered by the manufacturer as a recommended configuration. File this under, "What could possibly go wrong".

Yes my speakers are rated 8 Ohms but go down to 5 Ohms

I'm thinking of buying a WiiM Mini + a second hand Yamaha S501 or S701, instead of a WiiM Amp. Does anyone use it like this? Does the SPDIF out work at 24 bit / 96 kHz? Can WiiM Mini resample 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz sources to 96 kHz?

I use the Wiim Mini with my A-S301. I even power it from the amp's USB, though using Pure Direct will cut the power. The A-S301's digital input supports up to 24 bit 192khz. The Wiim Mini can certainly downsample but I dunno about upsampling.

Yes, the Wiim devices can be set to a fixed output resolution, so can resample everything to 96 kHz for example.

The mini doesn’t have that option, nor does the Ultra for that matter (yet). It’s currently just an option on the Pro and Pro Plus.

My apologies, I assumed it was available on all

The mini can down sample to a particular resolution or bit depth, you set the max resolution/bitdepth and if the source is higher it will downsampe accordingly. As far as I am aware the Pro or Pro+ work in the same way, responses from WiiM support suggest they can’t upsample, but they make so many updates to firmware that maybe they have changed this?

They have implemented fixed resolution in the pro and pro plus as I mentioned above, largely to get around the issue of clicks between tracks in certain dacs due to sample rate switching.

Thank you for all the valuable input. So, in summary, is there any other benefit of the more expensive WiiMs over the mini, if I definitely want to use it with an external DAC? I mean this resampling is nice, probably it uses a higher quality algorithm then the built-in one in DACs but is there anything else?

In general the Mini is the least capable of the WiiM devices given it has a quarter of the RAM and half the CPU cores of its siblings, as well as fewer connectivity options.

This link (while having one or two errors - the ultra doesn’t support AirPlay, for example, nor is AirPlay cast available; read the comments) is a reasonable overview of the WiiM range. The non-Mini WiiMs are Roon Ready, support Chromecast, have squeezelite clients, support room correction etc etc. I’d go for at least the Pro , if not the Pro Plus, as a starter WiiM tbh.
