It's pretty interesting that the internal layout is much different for the 30 compared to the 6800 unlike the 40 and 4800 which looked almost identical. Perhaps to better help with thermals?

Absolutely, the 30 has a much cleaning and heat dissipation efficient layout vs the 6800. That is the same as the 8015 vs 6700.
It also has something to do with the fact that the 30 has a slightly more powerful power transformer and block capacitors. So, for someone who intend to use preamp mode only, or at least preamp mode for the LCR, the 6800 may be a better choice, as the 30's better amp section will then have no advantage.
