WiiM Ultra

I’m looking for some help in deciding if it’s worth upgrading to the WiiM Ultra for WiiM Pro owners. I’m now considering instead of upgrading to the WiiM Ultra to just keep my Pro+ and adding the SMSL RAW-MDA1.

The WiiM Ultra just has an older single ES9038Q2M chip while the RAW-MDA1 has new dual ES9039Q2M chips, XLR outputs, dual digital coaxial and optical inputs, and better power supply.

The Ultra has a dedicated sub output for easier bass tuning and BT 5.3. Is there anything I’m missing where the Ultra could be a better option?
You listed the the feature differences, but nothing about your usage context or what challenge / benefits you are seeking to gain. So extremely hard to say what is a better option for your situation. A lot also depends on whether your bias style is integrated vs. components.

For my context (home office / desk stereo), I use a WiiM Plus as a Squeezebox, Airplay, Amazon Music, etc. network digital streaming source. The WiiM device is at the back of my AV rack (keeps cable mess hidden away), and connects via a single S/PDIF to my DAC with a volume control knob that is within easy arm's length.

So for me, it is an easy recommendation: downgrade your WiiM Pro to a WiiM Plus and add a DAC that supports the 2.2 multi-channel output that you need. But that is my situation. Your situation may be completely different and the Ultra is spot-on perfect for you.

I’m looking for a headphone amp/DAC that can be incorporated with my stereo sound system. Trying to connect the Wiim Pro+, CD player, TV, and PS5 into one unit feeding my integrated amp. I don’t know how good of a headphone amp the WiiM Ultra will be but it looks like it can do everything I need. I’m leaning towards RAW-MDA1 x Wiim Pro+ but I like the all in one Ultra setup.

I have an existing preorder with Crutchfield. My prior expected date of 7/5/24 has just been changed to 7/19/24. So apparently the 8/12 date only applies to new preorders.
I also have a preorder with Crutchfield, but I can't find any expected ship date for it in their web interface.

The Ultra gives you ARC for TV, and also RIAA for turntable if you ever add that to your mix. And, you can always add in a separate line out to dedicated headphone amp later if the WiiM ultra is not sufficient.

I am most interested to see how the screen works with Amazon Music and I don't want to use Alexa.

I currently have my iPad mini connected to my Loxjie D30 via USB, with the output going to an Emotiva preamp and Genelec speakers. Amazon Unlimited sounds great through the Apple Amazon Music app, but I hate the filmsy USB cable with the tiny connector, which looks like it could fall out if you breathe on it.

I intitally streamed from the iPad using Bluetooth, but I wasn't always happy with the sound quality or the stability of the connection. (Wifi seems more reliable and has a higher bandwidth. Surprsingly good, given the density of detectible Wifi devices in my area.)

I also have a preorder with Crutchfield, but I can't find any expected ship date for it in their web interface.

When I placed my order I received a confirmation email from Crutchfield that contained a link to their website. That shows my order status with an expected in-stock date. Then, this morning I also received another email from Crutchfield advising of the date change to 7/19 and asking if I wanted to keep my place or cancel the order.

Any idea when the silver will be available? I also received an updated date of 8/12 and I ordered 2-3 weeks ago. Since it’s getting pushed back, maybe I should wait for the silver since that’s what I’d prefer?

I caved and placed a preorder via Crutchfield. Hopefully the production units have correctly color coded jacks on the back.

BTW anyone know what size the headphone jack is? The headphone jack's probably not balanced considering nothing else is on it, right?

as yet they are looking into what BT transmitter to headphones is available so my take is that it will not support bt transmitt on release but may have it in the future... to me this only useful if you watch hdmi to headphone

also the 3.5mm headphone will be the same quality as whatever headphone socket you get on a mass market AVR - ie. dire

It does have a dedicated headphone amp chip, so I suspect it's performance will be better than dire, certainly. Uses the same amp chip (TPA6120A2) as the Topping DX3+ and Sabaj A20d (2023).

I decided to cancel my order for the Wiim Ultra which Amazon said wasn't expected until August 27th. I ordered the Loxjie A40 instead and received it yesterday. Using my Wiim Pro Plus with it does everything I need for my office setup. The headphone amp on the Loxjie is good and has plenty of power and sounds just as good as the Schiit Midgard.

The DAC seems to be good also. Can't tell any difference between it and the Schiit Modius or the DAC in the Wiim Pro Plus. (Not blind tested, just no obvious audible problems with it).

I can live without the screen on the Wiim Ultra. The Wiim Ultra is missing a USB C and coax input. That is a big drawback to me.

i think i said this before... Wiim's future plans are transparent

its clear they want to do a Ultra Pro somewhere down the line with type-c and all the stuff people want... maybe an updated BT chipset, XLR and so if you can afford to wait, wait.

To me... kill the damn phono. Like come on.

I’m planning to buy it specifically for the phono input.

Got this from WiiM today, regarding the Ultra :

"The WiiM Ultra supports balanced outputs, and we will support USB output in about a week, so please stay tuned."

No info yet on how balanced output will be implemented. (I prefer XLR connections.)
If they added balanced XLR out, total home run!!!! o_O
