Hello fellow ASR members! Just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge some less obvious, but valuable efforts that go on here. I have seen a few posts since I resumed moderator duties that emphasize that there is only one ASR moderator now. While it is true that I am the only current holder of the moderator badge, the resulting activity is greatly improved by: Several key supporting members that add their time and effort to improving moderation here. Some bring added experience and others...
https://pnw.aessections.org/ Yeah, it's me. If you can get there in person that would be better, I think. Yes, I know Saturdays are precious.
I am trying to deal with incredible amount of spam we are getting into member profiles, I have temporarily disabled editing profiles. If you are a Forum Donor you are not affected but otherwise, you may get an error. This is temporary until I find a better solution. Appreciate you putting up with this. :)
With the year coming to an end, time is to nominate a track that was released in 2025 that captured your heart more than any other. Please post a link to the video or the track so members can listen to it without searching. Whoever's video gets the highest number of likes gets a free piece of audio gear from me! Yes, earlier entries get more likes so best to post yours soon! :) Contest will close in 2 weeks (January 15th, 12:00am Pacific Standard Time). For me the one stand out is...
We have had recent issues come about regarding use of AI in member posts. I personally think this technology can be useful to us. And at any rate, hate having to police members left and right on what they post. That said, here are my thoughts: 1. If you are going to use AI, make it absolutely clear up front before just copying and pasting AI content. 2. Show the prompt you used and the engine (ChatGPT, etc.). Both of these can be useful to understand how the answer came about. 3...
I recently watched a fascinating discussion between Dr. Jennifer Groh (Duke University, Psychology & Neuroscience) and Andrew Huberman that offers deep insights into how our brains encode and integrate sights and sounds, and what this means for perception, attention, and cognition. The conversation goes far beyond typical pop neuroscience, drilling into topics directly relevant to audio science: dynamic sensory maps in the brain, how the superior colliculus merges auditory and visual space...
In my curator role, am cross posting the following content as it is embedded in a related thread and want to highlight for members that may have missed. While his books are worthwhile reading, this is a great way to get an overview direct from a major audio researcher and valued contributor. Thanks Floyd!
'Master Jobs Needed / Offered Discussion Thread'
I have been getting a number of career/job advice from people I know. I find that the current online system of recruiting people maddening. Seems that resumes get filtered randomly and never get to hiring managers. So applying to jobs seems at best a random process. I thought I create this thread to give people who want to have a job an opportunity to post here with the hope that someone reading the forum either has an open position, or can help others find one. Conversely, if members...
'Understanding How the Klippel NFS Works'
Questions regarding how the Klippel NFS works are raised in many of Amir's speaker reviews. Thomas has suggested starting a thread on this topics and here I am. I am starting this thread with a brief description of the basic principles behind the NFS. You can find much further details on the theory in the DIY 3D speaker scanner thread. What the Klippel NFS systems does is to approximate the speaker under test into the sum of a number of spherical wave expansion functions (source): These...
It is resonances that are mainly responsible for lack of neutrality in loudspeakers, so the first task for competent speaker designers is to minimize them. After that spectral balance and directivity control need to be attended to. The industry standard measurement method, used by Amir, which had its origins in Canada while I was at the National Research Council, is excellent at revealing resonances. It seems that, historically, this company has studiously ignored the science and gone the...
