WiiM Ultra

The problem with android phones is that there are so many different ones, all with different mics. With Apple, different models are few and so calibration against models is relatively easy . As it would be for a known mic in a remote. But with android phones - forget it.

Makes sense. Then the remote control solution would be the best one. One mic for everyone!

there is the nature of the microphone but also of the ADC which accompanies it in the remote control..especially when we know the very very modest use with which it is associated

That acts in the analog domain, so don't know if it's ideal for the same reason expressed before. The internals of each smartphone is different so could lead to a lot of variation. Following the same logic, the remote solution seems better as it defines a standard and makes it easier to relate to the software. (i guess)

with internal adc
that's his whole point...

Agreed. I said "The internals of each smartphone is different so could lead to a lot of variation". The problem is not that it's analog, it's that it makes for variation within every different smartphone. The microphone i mentioned before sends the info in digital format, i guess the adc processing is done inside the microphone's unit itself, so if everyone uses the same unit, it's the same thing. With the remote it's the same situation. I'm talking only on a standardization point of view as it was the initial matter when comparing to apple devices.

Can anyone comment on the scope of the USB port on the Wiim streamers?

Can music stored on a NTFS partitioned hard drive be played back if the drive is connected to the USB port?

Can music CDs be played on an external CD drive when it is connected to the USB port?

I don't have definitive answers, but...

> NTFS
The Wiim Amp supports NTFS, so probably:

> CD drive
Very unlikely IMO, but I don't see any statement one way or the other. (I assume you mean for playing music CDs. If you mean data CDs with music files, maybe.)

Thanks.

Yes, music CDs, Red Book, not data CDs.

I think if the Ultra could play music from CD Drives, WiiM would have probably advertised that feature. Kind of like Eversolo with their A6 and A8.

What you can definitely do though is play CDs from a CD Player, connected to the Ultra via Line, Coax, or Toslink.

Yes, of course one can always use a CD/DVD/Blue Ray player. However, as other music streamers, e.g. Eversolo and Lindemann, can play red book CDs from USB attached drives, it should not have been too hard for Wiim to do the same.

Probably no chance.
Hmm. That's a tough one. The expensive DAC might be doing some processing to make it "sound better", in which case it will not be "accurate". Otherwise, nobody would be able to hear any difference, but 95K buys a lot of wishful thinking!

Does the ultra have coax in?

Here are all inputs and outputs:

If you have a player with only Coax out, then you can convert that to Toslink for the Ultra, using a simple converter:

True, but how many boxes and sockets and plugs and cables etc do you really want in your life?

Purely as a DAC how does the Ultra compare to the RME DACs?View attachment 369693

Wiim doesn't compare well to RME.
The Loudness setting on the RME makes a big difference in audible quality. Not to mention better hardware and a ton of features Wiim doesn't offer. Plus, a remote on the RME that's a joy to use. It's crazy that anyone would even consider this comparison. I own Wiim and RME ADI-2 DAC FS. Wiim is fine for streaming but I wouldn't trust it as my only preamp on a nice speaker setup. The RME offers high quality balanced DAC, Preamp and headphone duty that compares very well with the best of them. Plus the new RME app takes control via computer to a whole new level.
