I really like the aesthetic myself.When my friend had those at his place for a while I not only enjoyed the sound I really liked the looks.
His wife on the other hand, absolutely hated them.

I have not heard these modern La Scalas, but owned a pair of the originals and the sound was a bit hard to love. I imagine adding a subwoofer and going active with a DSP, these new ones could work.
