Bluesound releases 2024 ICON streamer

It has clock display when idle on an functioning unit. For me I want an option to turn off screen or go into clock mode after a while when playing. As a screen saver. Received mine on thursday and can say that it to me sounds good, but some different nuances to the Wiim Ultra and Eversolo DMP-A6 ME/LHY that I also have. But no serious A-B blindtesting has been held. Some softwareimplementations is better on the Eversolo and Wiim as of now. Bought the Bluesound for Dirac possibillities when that arrives in a software update. More tweaking in settings with the Wiim and Eversolo avaliable at the moment. Which is best for you...the one that fit's your budget and needs. They all sound good.
If Bluesound are anything like their NAD stablemate, I would count on waiting a long time for any features "due in a software update". NAD, at least, are as guilty of selling products still under software development as Eversolo have been with the A6.

I may be being too cynical here - the Node Icon was at least certified Roon Ready on day one rather than several months after product launch. Given the number of newcomers here - and welcome to ASR, everyone - it's worth noting that promised features have a tendency to not arrive or for delivery time to blow out into years. If Dirac is really important to you, consider buying a product where it is already implemented.

I have a WiiM Ultra sat here on my desk also, I did some a/b testing and 110% agree with your assessment. To me the icon just sounded fuller and richer. Though the WiiM software is just better, it at least has a way to select your output preferences - line or, headphone etc.

As for the screen, it sounds like I had the perfect unit for you

I'm used to that...from every brand and different products, not only audio but also in cars. I have nothing to complain about with Wiim, Eversolo or other NAD products. As long as you have realistic expectations and know the world of programming, all these brands have lived up to my expectations. As long as you don't expect new software or firmware to change oil on your car, or make it do the dishes. After frequenting these hifi forums for over 20 years...I know alot of people have these crazy expectations. Some things can be done and some don't. And some of the stuff people expect have'nt even been promised by the companies...but gotten talked and discussed so much on the forums, that people believe that the company has promised this. A year on from product launch all you should expect is only small bug fixes....not new features. Although Wiim seems not to fall into that bracket.

I received my Node Icon this past Friday. Implementation in terms of set up wasn't quite as easy as I thought it would be, but certainly everything was functional for all advertised, first-day features within half an hour. No glitches.

From my universal disc player and Roku device, I've set up a HDMI splitter, which sends eARC via HDMI to the Node Icon, and the HDMI video to a nearby TV. I've plugged a thumb-drive with digital downloads into the back, and have set up streaming from Presto Music, my primary streaming source. I'm now using the Node Icon as my preamp, with balanced cables to my amplifier, a Hypex Nilai500DIY. The two RCA outputs connect to my two subwoofers (self powered, of course, with built in low-pass filters.)

Everything audio-wise is simply terrific! I am well pleased as far as that goes.

Whether anything is actually, human-detectably better in sound quality is debatable, but theoretically the Node Icon should measure better than my previous preamplifier, my previous headphone amp, the disc player's DAC, and my phone's DAC which I was previously using (only for the short term) to try out streaming. I do think it all sounds more precise and clearly resolved, but I've not attempted anything like double-blind tests, and I'm not going to since the main purpose was to collect the various digital sources better and more simply, and to add in a much better option for streaming.

The display is small enough that from my usual seated position for music the image and text simply aren't helpful, so I set the default to show a clock. I'd prefer something like VU meters, but the clock is fine. The most verbose information in text you'll get is only the album, track, and track timing, but nothing at all in terms of sample rate, bit depth, etc. That's slightly disappointing, but that specific information is already readily available on the app.

There were a couple confusing aspects to the app interface on my phone, but I got it all figured out with minimal grousing. I don't feel that there are any features missing that are truly important, but it's certainly not the most user-friendly app ever. It's also far from the worst, small praise to be sure. It could be better.

I wish it had come with a remote, but one from Bluesound is puchashable separately if I really need one, or I could program just about any IR remote.

All in all, I am happy with the purchase, especially for the most important element, which is bringing together all of my digital sound sources at a very high audio quality.

How is the eARC compatibility? Which TV are you using? I had the Fosi ZD3 but ran into the “doesn’t stay off” problem after a few days.

A tip: Activate Radio Paradise.
It offers sound gems and you even have the option of switching between FLAC and MQA for a sound comparison.
Btw., what happens if you connect the eARC input directly to an HDMI input (no (e)ARC input!) of your TV, external display,... My M33, also BluOS, then outputs the cover art, among other things.

You can also find good videos about BluOS 4.0 on YT.

Can the player on the PC/MAC be controlled (PLAY/PAUSE/NEXT) with the NODE ICON via USB INPUT (TYPE C)?

Well, that makes me look like a total idiot. I mean, I found those settings, which include the clock. But I'd swear it wasn't there when I first tested it. >Shrug< In any case, the text is so very tiny as to be totally useless unless you're no more than a few feet from the player.

As I wrote above, I did "get everything figured out." No glitches.

I stand by my comment that it's not the greatest or most user-friendly interface. But it's not the worst. It is rather limited in options and preferences.

And yes of course I found the website with overview and "manual."
