WiiM Ultra

I just read that in the roadmap for the ultra for the 15th of January 2025:

"Wireless Dolby 5.1 (Beta): Low-latency wireless Dolby 5.1 with surround channels. "

WTF that sounds awesome. Does anybody know more about?

Just that I've heard this - it's involve a 2nd WiiM (Mini, whatever) and an amp for the rears.

The Ultra would strip out the front 3 LCR channels, place the centre equally in the L&R, and send the rears to the Mini, in the same way you can link your Mini to your Ultra over wi-fi and have it playing the same thing.

It sounds so devilishly simple and obvious, you have to wonder why it hasn't been done already.

That would be great for me, as I already have an WIIM Pro and active rears - then I may be able to sell my atmos preav and only use the WIIM Ultra.

Time to get a move on with all those multichannel SACD albums I have ripped.

This is a really dumb question but I am considering buying a Cambridge Audio CXA61 and want to know if the trigger from the Ultra would turn the CXA61 on. Anyone have this setup or have any experiences?

It seems the CXA61 has both IN and OUT triggers. So the Ultra should be able to turn it on from standby.

Hi

I have the CXA 81 and recently purchased the ultra, yes the trigger will switch the amp on and off accordingly when using 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable. I have my Ultra connected to the TV which means I now only need the TV remote to activate the TV, Ultra & Amp. Obviously, you need the app or the WiiM remote to access other features but the convenience of being able to use one remote is great.

I just realised, you haven’t yet bought the CXA 61. Now I have the functionality of the Ultra, I am planning on selling my CXA 81 and very possibly buying a highly regarded Hypex Ncore amp from Nord Acoustics. Maybe something for you to consider too, I think it would be in the same price region as the 61.

It has been, in a sense — this is essentially what the Sonos Amp does, paired with either a second Sonos Amp or two wireless Sonos speakers for the rear surrounds — for several hundred $ more than Wiim of course.

(Or did you mean why hasn’t it been done by Wiim themselves already?)

You were right first time, and yes I'd thought about Sonos.

I think what I mean is that it should be comparatively easy to add wireless rears. But you usually end up being tied to proprietary systems, often tied into the manufacturers own speakers/amplification.

I'm not sure why AV manufacturers haven't offered wireless modules.

Proprietary will be for audio sync control, and because who doesn't like hardware sales.

I'm intrigued by this, I've ignored surround up to this point, but I have spare speakers that could be played with.

Dali has a wireless soundhub for their powered speakers for years now but as far as I know they haven't included a surround option in the Bluos application. I guess they would put NAD, Marantz and Denon out of business if they would.

Mine is a TransSpeed 6K, but I really think any generic Android TV box would do the trick. The two or three I've had in the past all show up in Google Play when I pick an app to install.

I am still not sure how you got this to work. Is this a full version of the app? I got a generic AndroidTV (this is a review unit, so I didn't get the Transpeed...I received a KickPi which runs Android TV OS 12).and it also says that the Wiim Home app is not available on the device (Same as my Nvidia Shield). I have tried using the APK to install and it can't be controlled with the remote and the app installs like it would look on a phone (very narrow in the middle of the screen). Is the Transpeed running Android for tablets instead of Android TV OS?

I also tried two different boxes, including the transpeed and couldn’t load the app with either of them.

thanks for the info, I don’t think it works with Android TV OS, natively. I am still using a Minisforum PC running wiim home in the living room. I have an app on my phone called RemoteMouse to get it up and running, but PCs need to be updated more often, so I would have preferred a AndroidTV solution.

Two ideas to beat up:

1. Use a Chromebook.
2. Use a Raspberry Pi and use Waydroid to run WiiM Home for Android (https://waydro.id/)
I have a Chromebook, but I prefer the smaller form factor of the smallish PC.

In my office, I have a docked ipad with hdmi out that feeds a screen and it can run Wiim home, but I like the idea of an androidtv app in the living room, so hopefully, they eventually put one out. The PC is pretty easy with the remote app, but I just don’t like so many updates, since it’s basically being used just for Wiim Home. I thought I would play more games when I got the PC, but it hasn’t worked out that way.

I have thought about getting a Pi to tinker with, but haven’t got around to it. Good suggestion, though.

That makes sense that it might be running Android for tablets. One of mine that it's working on is an older Version 10. Build is Transpeed_H616-userdebug 10 QP1A.191105.004 eng.ren.20201021.181527 test-keys Rev. BD32 if that helps. I believe the newer one it's working on is V13. Both were bought on AliExpress. I can remember the narrow on the screen problem, but I think that happened when I tried to sideload the APK onto a Firestick.

I setup my WiiM Ultra yesterday,

I had to increase the subwoofer trim on the WiiM Ultra to +6 and increase the subwoofer trim on the PB1000 Pro from -30 to -10.

Is there any risk of clipping the signal an damaging the SVS Plate amp? This is a known concern with AVR's if the subwoofer trim is pushed beyond 0db, would the same rules apply with the WiiM Ultra?

I do like to push the volume on occasions which worries me.
