WiiM Ultra

Good morning, has anyone seen this video:

In my case, I had to buy two pieces, the SMSL PO100 and the other one he recommended, the SMSL SU-1...

Do you think it makes sense and would there really be a difference in hearing?

Thanks
No, unless you're trying to use it as an isolation device between a noisy usb fixing a ground loop or other noise issue and the Wiim. The SU1 isn't doing anything to improve or degrade the sound. I really don't understand the point of coming to ASR and posting idiotic YouTube reviews filled with subjective babble and no measurements to back it up.

I don't really understand why USB would be better than optical outputs or how/why re-clocking works so I was hoping to get the benefit of people here who have more knowledge and experience.

I had the mistaken idea that this is what discussion boards like this were for.

Reclocking is useless since it's going to be buffered and clocked by the Wiim. Master clocks are used in studios where there can be numerous AD/DA devices involved and they all need to sync.

Thank you for your answer. I just disagree with the placement on ASR. After all, this type of question, at least for me, was important to have an answer. I don't have much knowledge and, as some people say, it's a waste of money. And I think that in the end, many people who don't even participate will read it and not spend money buying these things. I think that the more we put this information out there, the more information there will be for everyone.

The information is already here.

Good for isolation

Both measure great

The Wiim Ultra is 20% off for Black Friday on Amazon now. I just ordered my third for $263.20 USD.

Just ordered a Wiim Ultra on the Black Friday deal! I'm stoked.

Been wanting to try a decent spec'd streamer/preamp/eq. box since I saw the Minidsp SHD. While I like many features of the SHD, I couldn't turn down the price of this box to try out a dedicated 2 channel setup. Wish it had balanced outputs and had crossover capability to to drive L+R subwoofers in stereo, But I'm converting from single ended processor line outs anyway and currently have mono sub out. Going to be fun to play with and see if I think I hear any difference* between it and my current worst rated (on this site) NAD T753 in stereo mode.
*Pretty sure I will hear a difference. The Wiim should allow me to directly input the exact PEQ filters my speaker manufacturer recommends. That will be fun to do in itself to see how different my speakers sound. :) Never been able to try that with the NAD.

If you want dual subwoofer out, you would bypass the wiim dac. I am thinking of doing this by uusingwiim ultra coaxial to my zd3 then using the balance outs to two fosi za3s and then use each of their sub outs. Or send it to an av receiver with dual sub outs. Here also from svs some useful info . I also think iifyou do dual sub out one needs to be in opposite phase of the other subwoofer. I am enjoying my ultra just wish you could control the whole system from the screen. I would the 12v trigger out if you did it this way you could use a 12v trigger from wiim to zd3 to dual za3 in mono mode. The 12 trigger do save a lot of time turng on and of devices.

The Ultra's HDMI port does not do output so it couldn't be displaying anything on the TV. I haven't watched Darko's video yet, but he was either using a Tidal app on the TV or casting to it from a tablet and then outputting through the Wiim.
For those looking for a way to watch and control the WiiM Ultra (or any WiiM) on the big screen TV, since the Ultra HDMI is not out, here's another idea. An Android TV box with the WiiM app loaded. You wouldn't want to use the audio outputs of the box, but will be able to see "Now Playing" on your TV. Add a wireless mouse and you now have control as well. Another hardware purchase, yes, but you can get one for less than $30. I'd double check that the WiiM app works with the Android version of the box first though.

Do you have an example of one that would work out of the box? I have a Shield, but it uses the Android TV store and the Wiim app isn't included the latest time I checked. There may be a way to side load, but I would rather just have something work out of the box.

Right now, I have a small PC that I have connected to the TV and use an app called RemoteMouse for iOS to get the Wiim Album art to display while I listen to the Wiim Pro in the living room. In my office, I have an iPad connected to a TV that will show the artwork on the TV for the Wiim Ultra (when I am in the mood to have the TV on - the iPad and Ultra can display the artwork, which is usually enough, but I like the option.)

Mine is a TransSpeed 6K, but I really think any generic Android TV box would do the trick. The two or three I've had in the past all show up in Google Play when I pick an app to install.

Thanks, I will grab one after the holidays. I don't want to deal with a return given the current lines at this point, if it doesn't work. The computer solution is okay, but I would think an AndroidTV running Wiim would be easier.

Under $1000?
Could be $999 lol

it would 100% be $999 if the company themselves say "under $1000"

Indeed, lol

I recently started using the Wiim Ultra (picked it up on Black Friday—great deal!). I’ve got it hooked up to my old Marantz 603, and the difference is noticeable—the Marantz DAC is pretty terrible in comparison. Now I’m waiting on the A5 from 3e Audio. In hindsight, I probably should’ve gone with the Wiim Amp Pro, but I figured this setup would offer more flexibility, power, and fun (though also some extra hassle, since the auto power on/off won't be as seamless in this setup).

The display is great, and the whole family, including my wife—likes it.

A few questions:
  • Is it worth enabling the de-noise option for ARC/Optical?
  • Does changing the DAC filter make any difference? I can’t hear much of a change.
  • I ran auto-correction, and everyone in the family agreed the sound improved. It made me wonder: should I invest in a sub? The bass and sub-bass were noticeably boosted.
  • PEQ mode: L/R or Stereo?
