Hi there,
Has anyone tried the wiim amp with the ELAC uni-fi UBR62 ?
According to Erin's Audio Corner they have a sensitivity of 83 dB / 6 Ohms - so apparently they are hard to drive...
Just in case this might be relevant, I'd like to play it with a subwoofer (therefore the Wiim Amp choice)

Since I am a very satisfied user of streamers from the WiiM family (they replaced the Raspberry pi in my house), so I bought a bargain WiiM Amp. I wanted to use it in the bedroom. From the functional side, it is a fantastic device. Unfortunately, from the sound side, it is a failure for me. As a gadgeteer, I have a great many amplifiers at home from Class AB to the Class D amplifiers I use most often, including those based on the TPA3255 chip. Unfortunately, subjectively the WiiM Amp sounds the worst. Therefore, I suggest that those intending to purchase an amplifier from the WiiM family should wait for the unveiling of a new device from PFFB.

Pulled together a great system for my daughter's tiny Manhattan apartment. Should last her many many years.

*Wiim Amp $270
*Hisense 55" TV $540
*Philharmonic Audio True Mini $380
*Sunfire sub jr (used. from my collection)

If I were to buy a subwoofer new, what would you suggest I buy to go with this mini, low cost setup?

The Wiim amp is available for 299 € during the prime days on Amazon Germany. I pulled the trigger. If it works with my Canton Ergo 700 I will save a lot of shelf space compared with my current Pioneer NC 50 DAB (which also has a Class D amp).

Received the amp yesterday and must say: another winner by Wiim! It does what it is supposed to do flawlessly, the app works as great as it does with the Pro Plus (which stays for feeding the headphone amp). I don't detect any coloration on my 20 years old Canton Ergo 700 DC. Don't have their impedance curve at hand, but the load dependency of the amp doesn't seem to matter here. Power is sufficient for my listening levels (and beyond).

EDIT: new firmware is installing - USB 2-CH is added so the headphone amp or any dongle can be connected to the Wiim amp. Great!

The USB out from the Wiim Amp to my DX3 pro+ works perfectly. It's a bit incovenient that I had to enter the PEQ presets from the Wiim pro plus again from scratch since there is no way to copy the presets from one Wiim device to another. Would be a nice feature for further updates. Updated my rating from "fine" to "great".

oh? it can also connect to a dac via usb?

So theoretically I could connect my Wiim Amp to an external DAC and from there go to a power amp?
I mean, this would make it possible to use the wiim amp as a DSP (PEQ + room correction) and as an active crossover whilst using an external amp that delivers more power, right?

At the moment, it appears you can do with the Ultra for optical and coax outs, but it’s unclear with USB.

The Ultra can provide a crossover and bass management, then send front L&R via digital, and sub out analogue, but I’m not sure with the Amp. And again, the only digital out on the Amp is USB.

Only one way to find out - plug it in.

WiiM Sub out to Sub and USB out to external DAC to Mains is generally not recommended due to potential clock drift.

Since USB DACs are usually asynchronous nowadays, over time the two DACs can get out of sync with each other.

Yes.

Since USB DACs are usually asynchronous nowadays, over time the two DACs can get out of sync with each other.

Whilst that’s possible, surely we need to remember:

1 - These are very accurate devices, and the drift will only be slight.
2 - Any drift will be reset every new track.
3 - As the main audible source would be your L&R speakers, we can count that as ‘correct’, and see how far the sub drifts from this. Due to the nature of the frequencies handled by the sub, errors there are going to be far less noticeable.
4 - Remember, this is one DAC for frequencies above a certain point, and another for frequencies below that point. This is not two DACs trying to play the same information.
5 - It’s not unusual for people to use WiiMs in groups around the house, some have even taken to adding a Mini as separate unit to drive a sub. Other multi room systems with ‘party mode’ do something similar, and without issue.

I’ve looked into this recently, and while I agree it is absolutely genuine theoretical issue, in most real world situations, it shouldn’t manifest itself in audibility.

But as ever, I’m more than happy to hear of any evidence to the contrary.

This is a really good idea

I have objections about the whole post but specifically for that:
That would only happen if the xover between the sub(s) and mains was a very hard brickwall filter.
It's not,it's far,far from it,a broad area of freqs overlap there.

And if you think how far people go for phase correction...

Yes it’s nit a brick wall, but it’s not a small portion of overall frequencies.

The other points remain. If you disagree with these, please feel free to say why.

With an xover at 80-100Hz for example, overlap and drift will be well into voices area.
And that's an area no one should mess with.

Also not all plays are 3-4 min,we classical listeners for example listen to works well more than an hour, sometimes being the same track.
As for the rest, apart from #5 re-read my last sentence.

Hi there! I bought a Wiim Amp during Prime Days (240 CHF was hard to resist). I wanted to check whether the power is enough to run the ELAC UF52 in my living room (35 m2) and how it sounds in comparison with my current system (Wiim Pro Plus + Hypex NC122MP-based amp). In theory, these speakers have a quite high impedance in the upper range (over 10 Ohm) so I was expecting load dependency causing some audible issues (which could be anyway corrected with PEQ).

I received the Amp today and I was playing a bit with it. I have to say that it ticks all my boxes and I am overall happy. It sounds good, it looks good and it works flawlessly.

I did some quick measurements using REW and a Dayton Audio iMM-6C (to be able to correct for my room as I do not have an iPhone in hand) and compared them with old measurements I did with my main system (Wiim Pro Plus + Hypex NC122MP-based amp). Both are averages of 9 measurements at sightly different listening positions (the individual curves look also pretty similar among them). As I mentioned, I was honestly expecting some kind of load dependency associated issues in the high range but the curves are almost indistinguishable (especially considering that they were not taken at the same time and the positions of the mic may not be exactly the same). I applied PEQ to the range between 30 and 300 Hz to get rid of room resonances as I did in my previous system and it all looks (and sounds) good.

I have no way to do a proper volume-matched blinded subjective listening test so I guess I will leave the Amp in my living room for a few days and check how everyone in the family feels about it. The Hypex can play to slightly higher levels (it is more powerful according to specs) but, honestly, I do not see the need with my speakers.

240 CHF for such a small wonder is just mind-blowing! I am not sure whether in my less than perfect listening room (and listening habits) I will be able to hear any differences between the Hypex+Pro Plus, the Amp and the future Amp Pro (with PFFB and a better DAC). I will wait to see how measurements and reviews look before deciding on whether I keep the Amp, get an Ultra to replace the Pro Plus, an Amp Pro to replace the separates or I deal with the upgraditis until the Amp Ultra comes around.
