Spirits, what you drinking...

I was in Dover this week and found a good Italian restaurant for the one dinner with colleagues. As is my tradition at after a good Italian meal, I have Sambuca and espresso. This time, it was black Sambuca, and it was delicious.

Quit drinking any alcohol some 10yrs ago. No medical or addiction reason. I never liked losing control or sharpness of senses. Never went back. 0% beers were awful then, now many are just great.
Gin is what I was missing most. Took me almost until today to find a superb brand.

BTW - everyone be happy with their choices. This certainly isn’t meant to educate - promised. Cheers!

Currently I'm finishing off a bottle of Talisker 57° North, which does have the gimmick of being 57% ABV to match the latitude of the distillery on the Isle of Skye. Thankfully, this gimmick also means it's at cask strength (or only very slightly less), so there's an abundance of flavor and wonderful peppery Talisker character.

I'm not usually too big on non age statement whiskys, but this is a good 'un.

I have a few other bottles I'm currently nipping at, including a peated Bunnahabhain that just knocks the socks off everything else with how ridiculously gigantically bold and rich it is, certainly not for the faint-hearted. Fittingly, it is titled "Pirate Ships Are Burning".

The next big thing will be the Scotch Malt Whisky Society advent calendar, which I've just ordered :)
Jeez - I remember. Not even adding Coke and ice would make this stuff acceptable. Would always taste like eating campfire remains o_O

If I opened a bottle of Laphroaig in the house, the Redhead would make me open windows.

So, I take my peaty Scotch to the basement :)

(My favorite Bowmore is a bit less “aromatic” but I take it to the basement, too.)

Nonsense! This stuff all tastes the same. Unless you blind test your opinion is worthless.

Now, go conduct an experiment. I need you to get at least 7 drams out of 10 correct before I will accept your opinion.

I miss the old 15yr expression of Laphroaig from back before the great shortage happened. I like the 10, but the extra 5 yrs knocked off some of the rough edges and turned that wild bronco into a thoroughbred race horse.

But for me… it’s Islay (or Talisker), or bust. D@mn fine whiskies. Highland Park is the only other Scotch I touch.

Ah, wheated bourbon.. I started the bourbon phase when I could get the Weller 12 Yr for under $30 a bottle.
Haven’t really found any I like as much.

Indeed. This was under $40 at BevMo, pours at the bar were $10. I drank a lot of this back in the day. ;)

Have it and a 10 Year in a box.

Maybe one will get opened when I retire.
I don't "collect" or trade in bourbon. I have a friend who does though and I've been fortunate to try a lot of unicorn juice because of him.

I'm truly grateful for that time when I could afford that, or old Black Maple Hill!

As a side note, while I was working on the bar side of a restaurant as a diversion, I got our bar manager to pull that 12yr Van Winkle down and pour some for us. He had never tried it.
After that night, his opinion of best bourbon in the house changed!

I hope you get to enjoy it sometime soon. :)

My neighbor owned a liquor store..

It's insane how expensive Weller is in the US broadly speaking. Like, we have significant markups from importing so far afield but the couple of cask picks we have got in Singapore end up around secondary pricing for the normal bottlings!

(obligatory offer to bring round anyone who gets to Singapore to whisky bars here)
