This recording pairs two unlikely artists in what seems like a classic singer-piano accompaniment. However, it is anything but. Spalding is a virtuoso bass player whose chops extend beyond that of “merely” a Jazz singer. Accompanied by Fred Hersch the duo manages to entertain like one would expect from this setting but with ab added dimension.

I listened to this album in 7.2.4 and while the mix was subtle the added dimensionality suited the music very well. Highly reccomended.

Favorite track: Girl Talk

Pairs well with a good scotch.

Currently one of my favorite recordings and bas been since discovery. Probably one of the the most competent groups of modern musicians. If you don’t like a particular track wait three minutes and the colors will change completely. Absolutely insane musicianship from what appears to be wonderful people.

I listened to the entire album in 7.2.4 Atmos both on AM but also watched on physical Bluray. If you haven’t seen one of these Snarky Puppy concerts the Bluray video helps explain the spacial philosophy. The mix attempts to place you in the middle of the concert as one of the few spectaters in this unique concept. Highly recommended!

Years ago, I listened to the DA mixes of some Elton John (Tidal), they were fine. I didn't like how there lossy though, they were in the "Dolby Digital Plus" format. Do not know if Apple Music has lossless DA tracks, probably not since many streaming platform share the same files.

AM is lossy in DA. However, when comparing to BluRay the quality seems acceptable. I still buy physical DA media if available.

The Jacob collier album above is a magical tour through the final stage of his Jesse project. Dolby Atmos suits his complex kaleidoscope of sonic colors and helps pick apart what I’d regard as information dense virtuosity. Beautiful album!

Are these actual multich mixes or just the Dolby Atmos upmixer via a streaming service?

They are actual DA mixes.

They are not all available on disc. Some are recorded in Spacial audio. Many are remastered mixes from various studios. You can research individual albums to see which method and what studio. For instance Rhino recently rereleased Fleetwood Mac Rumors and The Doors in Atmos.

I'm just a little leery of the whole Atmos thing as much of the music is simply via upmixer/algorithm rather than a deliberate mix done done in a studio. Spacial the brand or spatial as in multich?

Understood. If that is your concern I’d recommend downloading from Deutsche grammophon, 2L, and small niche houses like spiritofturtle.

I collect discs for the most part, dvd-a, sacd, bluray....those labels I'll check out for multich downloads....fwiw don't have Atmos speakers installed, too big a pain :)

I hear you. I’m an avid SACD collector as well and enjoy traditional channel based mch.

Are you finding a lot of detail of who is doing the multich mix and with what gear? There's not a lot of choice out there really, tho....and I'm thankful for people like Steven Wilson....

Not really but I usually don’t spend alot of time on researching which studio and what gear they use. I usually read the blurb on a jewelcase or whatever the metadata has to offer.

How do you see the provenance on that? These are all also available on disc? (I didn't try and research).

ps Or what defines an "actual" DA mix?
I forgot to mention snarky puppy Sylva is available on Bluray as well as two other of their live albums.

The picture is deceiving. I bought the Bluray and watched the concert on a projector screen. I haven’t heard the AM version.

A power quartet consisting of Eric Clapton, Nathan East (co-written songs with performers such as Bobby Womack,Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, Joe Satriani, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, Toto, Kenny Loggins, Daft Punk, Chick Corea, and Herbie Hancock.), Steve Gadd (worked with Chick Corea, Steely Dan, David Gilmour, Herbie Mann ETC), and Chris Stainton (of The Who).

Shot in a mansion (Claptons?) in the British countryside this recording is an acoustic, laid back, and highly satisfying trip through Claptons catalogue. The recording has a great sense of space, the musicianship is top notch, and the the film is beautifully done panning between the concert and the beautiful surroundings in which it is filmed.
