Monitor Audio Gold 100 (2019 revision) measurements by SoundStage/NRC

Would be quite curious to see some Klippel measurements of ANY of this brand.

Amir reviewed the MA Silver 100s 6th gen.

For what it’s worth I’ve owned my MA Silver 100s 6th gen for 6 years. They’ve been very enjoyable. As a bonus they have a high WAF.

MA raised the price on the 7th gen by $500 which puts them against strong competition like the Wharfedale Lintons at the same $1500 price.

I actually like the MA Bronze series best.
They have a clear but also more mellow tonality.

Once they started getting into the gold and platinum range, especially with the addition of the ribbon tweeters, for me they got a little bit too tipped up in the high frequencies with more of an antiseptic quality,

They've been using AMT style tweeters for a little while now. Apparently difficult to keep the distortion down on the ribbons. Some might say, good decision; _Bravo_ ...

Are there any measurements you can share about this particular aspect?

Amazing. Thank you.
What’s the source?
Soundstage network . com , same as in the first post. Admittedly the pl100 is a decade older but still shows what was going on. Btw the ribbon, it got worse at 96dB

Thank you very much for sharing!! Earlier in this thread I mentioned that I compared the Silver 100 (7G) with the B&W 606 (S3) and preferred the Silvers because they were less fatiguing and had a great bass response. Unfortunately my girlfriend did not like the large size of the Silvers, so I ended up buying a second hand pair of MA Gold (5G). I like them, although they can be a little bright at times!? Since I never did a proper AB test, which was not the smartest choice I know:rolleyes:, I still wonder if I made the right decision.

I am not very good at interpreting those graphs, but the MA Gold (5G) seem to measure quite flat, right?

I am also curious about the best way to set the LPF on my SVS sub.

I picked up a set of Gold Reference 10 a while ago, as a piece of nostalgia, since they were the first high end speakers I bought with my own cash.

They are excellent! I thought maybe I remebred them with rose tinted ears, but nope - they are just excellent speakers.

A little HF boost and a little presence dip, but not objectionable at all, in fact I quite like it - very alive and energetic, but no resonances or distortion to fatigue. I was impressed by the port, too. No cabinet mode leakage or pipe resonance.

I think they are intended to have a little boundary reinforcement, but only a few dB, which works well in British brick built homes.

If they added a waveguide and used a notch on the upper woofer breakup point it would be a SOTA model by today's standards.

Looks like a OEM Seas 27TBFC tweeter. Only PP film caps in the crossover. Ceramic ali cone, long before SB Acoustics made them so popular. (Woofer might be Seas OEM? The phase plug looks like the Excell series).

I have the current Bronze 3007g floorstanders and they’re sounding very good on the end of my modest Cambridge Audio CXA61.

I would not be surprised if the Bronze and Silver range measure better than the current Gold and higher with AMT tweeters.

@ssashton nice DIY!

Regarding the measurements, if anyone would be able let me know if the if the Gold 100 5G also have issues with the AMT?! And let me know based on the measurements if they perform well? This is the reason I revived this thread

Maybe the Golds are a bit more analytical and that can be perceived as brightness with some tracks(?)
Have you tried taming the highs? Try a rug, treat first-reflection points, try different toe-in.
And of course, you can always use some EQ.
If the bass is good, the highs are usually fixable.

Thanks! I Did some changes, I have a large deep pile rug/carpet in front of the speakers. Also, I have a bit less toe-in, only 10 degrees in a perfect 3 meter triangle (FR-FL-MLP all 3 meters). The the speakers are aimed towards the back of my listening position.

Lastly I did some EQ:

Using the multi EQ app I changer the curve. At 3kh until 20kh it went slowly down to 3db.
(in green you can see the original line).

Any suggestions to make these Golds less fatiguing / hot?

Toe them out 10 degrees?

Toe them out 10 degrees?
Straight or Toe-out solves it I guess. But does not sound nice with voices (weird large soundstage).
