My top picks in no particular order:

The Thing - the original John Carpenter version with man made special effects, just brilliant. The remake sucks.
Alien - scared the living daylights out of me at the movies.
Blade Runner 2049 - yep, liked it more than the original.
Arrival - Denis Villeneuve is one of my favourite directors.
2001 A Space Odyssey - I've lost count of the times of watched it trying to understand it
Serenity - a great adventure romp that introduced me to the brilliant one season Firefly series that I'd completely missed.
Wall-E - my favourite animated movie by a long way.
Rollerball - I was 13 when I saw it at the movies and wondered for years why it wasn't introduced as a bone fide sport.
The Matrix - soooo many bullets!
Inception - great movie and the looks of confusion on half the theatre's faces at the end was priceless.

Typically the 1951 version is considered the original "The Thing" story and is classic 50's sci-fi. They usually cut out a short section of the locker room scene in Rollerball, must have run out of towels. :) Which reminds me no one has mentioned Barbarella.

No surprises here. Got to see 2001 on the big screen for the first time a couple of years ago - superb.

I highly recommend Primer (2004), it's super low budget (cost 7k to make I think), but puts so many big budget films to shame.
I'll avoid giving any of the real plot away as it's much better viewed with no idea where it's going, I had to re-watch it the following day after the 1st viewing I was so impressed with it.

P.S. After posting those two sci-fi flick trailers ^ above I saw that couple members mentioned them, bravo!

* 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) ... the same. And the newer UHD 4K HDR Blu-ray is beyond real, the real deal for any home cinema lover.

** Metropolis (1927) ... the same.

⭐ Members here know their sci-fi flicks entertainment in high caliber class. ⛳

@ #12 you mentioned 'The Time Machine' (1960) starring Rod Taylor ('The Birds').
That was a big favorite when I was a kid...still.

I loved the 1951 classic too ;)

But of course; the 3-Disc Special Edition (Blu-ray) comes with both versions (1951 & 2008). That was a nice touch when it was released and I jumped on the opportunity.

Agree on The Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet, and BladeRunner
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (both versions)
Day of the Triffids (OK)
2001
THX1138

The big problem is that some of the best sci-fi authors have just not translated to film well, only Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 works most other adaptations of his stories only work as TV episodes (IMHO).

If you want to have fun there are dozens of Japanese films with strange social commentary such as Godzilla vs the Smog Monster and all the Roger Corman films. I've spent 60yr. watching them all.

It took four posts before someone (you) mentioned 2001 (1968) in post #5.
* It should have been mentioned in post #1, or #2 @ the very latest.
Thank you for #5 spot (post).

Forbidden Planet (1956) was also another classy mention, by Ray in post #2

Because sci-fi flicks matter ...

Incisive observation. Also, some more oriented Fantasy films have a touch of sci-fi in them. IMO they fit in the "decor" (figure of cinema speech).

Interstellar is the best, by far in my opinion, compared to most all of these. The "Docking" scene alone is brilliant. The "Mountains" scene is also awe inspiring... You don't typically get two of those that good in one movie.

Notes:
-Whatever universe the movie is in, they don't have to accurately scientifically explain the chemical composition of kryptonite and how it balances in a chemical equation with other elements.
-Slow to start is fine if it's worth it.
-Making me cry earns points.
-Start Wars is an example of a good soundtracks. Interstellar is an example of a Great soundtrack.
-Interstellar should have the audio remastered and leveled so the dialogue isn't drowned out all the time.
-Time doesn't work how snobs, snots, or "smart" people think it does in movie universes, try to think of a way it makes sense instead of why it doesn't, and the former is how it works in that universe.
-"It takes place in this universe," Is A Lie unless it's a documentary, historical, etc. If the timeline is in the future, assume the laws of physics have changed to accommodate what has happened in that movie.

Those two above...underrated in my objective scientific cinematic opinion.
Highly sophisticated...a mind trip...both. ...Makes you think beyond this material world ...
Excellent for the brain, the heart pulse, and the spirit of tomorrow.

* Did someone mention Dune ?
