WiiM Ultra

are you guys deliberately avoiding the final conclusion to that bluesound node review?

I just received the Ultra yesterday. I previously have had experience with the Heos Link 2, Bluesound node 2i, Wiim mini, Wiim pro and Naim ( last three still in use) I mainly bought the Ultra for bass management duties so the Ultra is in my main system ( stereo, audio only).

What I immediately liked is that with the app you can increase/ decrease the bass output from + to - 15 db without altering some eq/peq or (worse) standing up.

What I still don't like about the user interface start screen is that as a preamp first thing you want to do is select the source like on the screen. Naim does a better job at that. Open app, select device, select source, which you can rename, or your radio preset all one click away on the home screen.

And in the device menu of the Wiim app you have to scroll down for the most used audio options. Rename device is on top, eq, sub on/off etc is way down and audio output is at 11. Or do people want to set it and forget it?

Rambling on, I connected the cd player (through toslink) to the Ultra and (through coax) to my pre- amp. Sub still connected to the sub out of the Ultra so now I can control the volume of the main speakers with the pre amp remote and seperately the volume of the sub with the remote of the Ultra. That's svs territory! Haha. Defeating the eq of the mains ofcourse but that's OK for now.

My Ultra should be here today. What is the general consensus about using the room correction? I have an iPhone so no problem there. Do you generally just let it do it's thing and then tweak? Which of the supplied target curves do you use?

That's what I did -- let the Ultra RC run its course several times, each from a slightly different spot in the general area where I listen. Then went in and made some manual adjustments which primarily consisted of backing off a bit on the dB level of correction that RC made. I certainly won't claim perfection, but it did make a nice improvement.

The other thing I did was use the "save" feature where you can assign your own unique name to a correction. I now have "drapes open" and "drapes closed" as saved presets along with one for particularly sibilant material. Lots of options with being able to save particular curves -- for example, you could do your own "loudness" curve for low-volume listening. The possibilities are endless.

I just used the RC as is and found out that the auto room correction opens up the sound stage. As if other frequencies clutter the room when prevelant. Nice to play with for sure.

Got the WIIM today. Set it up did some quick room correction and so far am very impressed. Listened with the built in DAC for a bit but then switched back to my external, not because it was quantifiable better, but i just like that sound a bit more subjectively.

The one issue I'm having is that I have a USB thumb drive with all my music on it that i plugged into the USB port and it's not recognized at all. It worked perfectly with my Raspberry Pi running Volumio, but I'm thinking maybe the WIIM needs it to formatted in a specific way to work? Any ideas?

I'll try the USB with external HDD and sticks this weekend but I'm fairly sure this is dicussed before

We’re all different, but this is me.

You don’t sit down with the family to listen to Dark Side of the Moon like you do to watch The Wizard of Oz. So if it’s just you listening, take the readings from one spot.

Calculate the Schroeder frequency of your room; there are online calculators.

Run a full 20Hz-20Khz sweep. This will be saved as your RC, but also ad a custom EQ. Look at the results above your Schroeder frequency. Note any real, massive baddies, ignore the rest.

Go to your custom eq, and turn off all the bands above your Schroeder frequency, sort from those real baddies.

Now, are there any big bass nulls? If not, great. If there are, you need to jack up the sub’s volume. And stick your sub in a corner. It causes what we used to call ‘mad bass’ but what we now call ‘eq-able peaks’.

Anyway, play around with that. Errors higher up your frequency range, that’s just the sound of your room, and you get used to that, and your brain accounts for that, within 5 minutes of walking in.

Works for me, as they say.

Worth remembering that if you add energy to a null you could just increase the depth of the null.

After listening for awhile, I ended up turning off the room correction EQ as I preferred the sound without it. It added too much bass and the sound was over boosted kind of like how Sonos speakers sound, initially impressive but fatiguing with a longer listen. It was sounding a bit congested and missing some detail. But I will go back and run it again when i have some more time and then customize it as it was just too much but did some things I liked.

The phono stage is no worse than the built in one in my Denon 1700ne so it's a lateral move there. At some point I'lll get a better one, maybe a Zen Phono and change the input to line in.

Reformatted my USB stick from Mac Extended to fat32 or whatever option that was closest that the Mac's Disk Utility gave me (ms-dos something?) and re-copied all the music to it and it recognized and scanned my library.

Generally happy. It's a nice piece of equipment.

This is true. It’s also not an absolute, or you wouldn’t get a null, you’d get absolute silence.

I find that, with the sub in a corner, you always get enough of all the frequencies, that even the nulls are loud enough; it’s then just a question of pulling everything else down. In addition, a loaded room will have fewer nulls.

This is especially true when considering my other comment above - you’ll usually listen sitting alone. It shouldn’t be too tough to land on a seating position where nulls are not an issue, or at least far less of one.

I should add, this has worked for me in a couple of set ups, it may not for others. I think it’s worth trying, simply because it’s …simple. And free.

Just going back to the fact that we’re in a WiiM Ultra thread, just try it. Stick your sun in a corner. Increase the sun level. Do a basic room correction run for starters, and see what you get. If you’ve got nulls which are un-EQ-able, tough break. If you’ve no nulls, or far smaller nulls than before, and you can EQ down the peaks, who’s to complain?

We need a Wiim ultra with a better headphone amp so I can replace my Wiim Pro + Topping DX3 Pro+ on my desk with a single box

Good morning.

I ask you for information on the Wiim Ultra Streamer:

Can it work correctly if connected to the network via an Eterneth cable? I do not have the possibility of Wi-Fi but only of a wired network.

In particular, does the application on the smartphone work correctly? I see that the device is provided with an input with a network cable.

I have to listen to other free internet radios.

Thank you very much and best regards.
Alessio.

It's certainly meant to, but only if your phone is connected to the same network somehow. I haven't tried it.
