Would a balanced Topping Dac be ok to hook up to some Genelec 8030 monitors and use the Dac as a volume control ?

And does anyone know if the Genelecs have a volume limiter built in ?

Also considering sometime like the SMSL D-6s , would be great if the dac has an traditional style volume knob built in to it

Thanks

Yes, as long as it has volume control pot.

Yes

But bear in mind you can also use the GLM software to control the volume for a digital source. Also bear in mind analogue sources are converted to digital by the speaker, processed by the speaker DSP (including active crossovers) before being converted back to analogue.

Finally depending on your source, there is nothing wrong with controlling the volume in the digital domain, before sending to the speaker.

Thanks. How do you control the GLM software ?

There are reports of the volume suddenly going to 0 dB on Topping DACs, presumably a software glitch. The Genelec’s should have proper overload protection so the chances of damaging the speaker are lower than with a traditional passive speaker with amp, but it’s a bit of a risk.

Your best bet is to just go with a decent preamp to control volume. The Schiit Freya+ is transparent and seems pretty reliable (though it too is dependent on an IC to control the relays).
