Nominate Your Favorite Track of 2024 (Contest)

Each time I hear this song I'm grabbed by its emotion, absorbed in its beautiful harmonics, and captivated by the tension in its brilliant composition. This is one of Steven's masterpieces.
It also proves that Steven is a basshead, the subbass on this is something else (especially for the genre)

It's not fair to play on emotion, but what is music but narrative? Japanese composers have a style. It is pretty, but not excessively so.

One was Ryuichi Sakamoto. I have friends who were close with him, and one passed away untimely in 2022. So just a contribution and take this contribution out of competition.

As he was terminally ill he recorded a solo piano movie concert filmed by his son at NHK Studios. He recorded it over 8 days in 2022, died in 2023 and the recording was released in 2024, Grammy nominated. Very clean recording and the black and white film is worth a watch for lovers of original piano music. There are a lot of microphones in there and I wonder how it was mixed.

(from film with credits)
I am not a piano recording specialist, but my initial impression is that there's a lot of processing added. I hear significant compression and I also hear an effect that is similar to tape flutter. It could be that they recorded it on an old lo-fi tape machine, but there are plugins for that these days that can emulate all forms of tape distortions and maybe they used that, or it is the reverb and echo from the room that's picked up by the many different microphones that results in "weird" phase effects. Nothing wrong with anything by the way, just trying to state what I think it is I am hearing, and I would love for someone who is actually "in the know" to chime in.

skimmed through the 15 pages and "liked" a couple that struck me most. Tough contest for the later posts I think but I don't know how to do it better. My request to @amirm would be to list the top 5 or 10 vote getters so we can listen to them.

Like this idea and next time each participant gets 3 likes, that can be changed until the end of the contest. Anyway this was a lot of fun and enlightening.

and you get my third "like" and for 2024 probably the one that makes me feel the best!
edit: and now back to old John Hartford albums, same as every year...

I'm serious and not joking/mocking. How can a participant be fair to all if they make up their own rule(s) that go against the contest rules?
Because it does not go "against" the contest rules. If the rule is that you can submit for any year, and you decide, as an example, that you're going to submit a track from 2019, because that was a "lucky" year, then you are within the rules. Similarly if you wish to restrict your entries to this year, you've met the rule. Rules constrain the entries coming in, but as far as one's own biases and prejudices, those are not constrained by the rules.

That is a very good idea.

It might be a bit self-serving to put your own track here, but hey, I worked incredibly hard on this and it features one of my all time favourite singers, Ross Jennings of Haken, who kindly agreed to guest on it. It's doing pretty well for us too, with over 50,000 views on YouTube and similar streaming numbers on Spotify. A blend of indie folk, post rock, and prog. It's definitely the song I listened to the most this year.

My favourite song by another artist is "Come to Light' by Meer, though. It's incredible.

Is there a single music track that really captured your heart in 2024? For me, this was it: the cover song by David Gilmour's daughter, Romany Gilmour: Between Two Points. I especially like this tour rehearsal video. The bass is distorted but the vocals are well recorded, highlighting the calm and beautiful voice of Romany:

The guitar segment at the end by David is a superb bonus, clearly demonstrating his mastery of the instrument.

Post your favorite song (NOT album). Members will vote with Like button. Whoever gets the highest number of likes, myself excluded, will get a gift from me come January 2nd. I will tally the results on the new year.

EDIT: Please only nominate one track.
I like the dog on the set. It reminds me of those old Leon Russell and friends videos, with all kinds of people hanging out, including a lady doing some baking. Musicians need food!

I think it is a bit different than Opeth, but fans of Opeth should be intrigued enough to check them out. They are a bit less "70s keyboard proggy" than modern Opeth.
modern opeth isn't my cup of tea they got too folky for my taste, i prefer katatonia these days for something in that vein. that said i loved some of their older stuff watershed and back. blood incantation have electric guitars so i guess they have that in common

Such a distinct voice, excellent singer and very nice composition with an attractive build-up. Sivert Høyem - The Rust.

Amidst all the extremely unique tracks in this thread (that this song obviously shares little with), this song just happens to be posted after a Pearl Jam track. And, call me crazy, but this song sounds like...Pearl Jam, singer and all. Just a slight tweak on the vocal tone and few would not mistake it as a Pearl Jam track (from the more recent "standard" rock albums).

Nice song, BTW.
