There was an active, 4-way I believe, German speaker that suspended the cabinet in a metal frame/stand. I have to dig into that, the name of the company eludes me.
They were well regarded and came out in the early eighties. If I can find it I'll post it.

Well, they were sealed and suspended in the air, though the enclosure was a rectangular box. They were pretty heavy, and hung from 4 beefy springs on top.

I’m thinking of a sealed, air suspension speaker, with an expandable volume.

As that internal volume has the opposite phase than the sound going out it would only just partially cancel the bass, a bit like an open baffle loudspeaker.
