I just tested with optical, and it is louder than USB by a good amount. Same output as BT and analog in.
Could you, or anyone else compare the USB volume/output with one of the other inputs?
Performance as an amp and DAC is probably pretty similar, and the slight differences would not make it worthwhile. If you like the case, layout, and features better then it might make sense for you.Is this a worthwhile upgrade over the SMSL AD18 (for speakers, using mostly toslink and BT)?
I guess I can just go eat my hat now.A30 is objectively better https://www.audiosciencereview.com/...w-and-measurements-of-smsl-ad18-dac-amp.7325/
Whether you can hear the difference depends on a lot of things, but A30 is almost 30dB better so you probably would.

:::::::::::::::::::i just tested USB against Bluetooth, volume is definitely lower on USB by a margin of 6 points at least..
another thing, now i have a mac and Bluetooth there is like 4.0 or something, but there is voicing difference as well between the two inputs, even after leveling by ear, the difference is too obvious ( Bluetooth has more front presentation but its like thin.. i could not get this on USB no matter what volume)
prefer usb, but damn i dont have anything upstream to connect to at the moment ( need to buy a rasperry for usb i guess... cause it sucks to have computer somewhere on the ground and just look at it from distance...like dumbass, not able to use it :-(
oh well Bluetooth for now will do..
I have one and it sounds great. Nice and clear. Balanced speaker amp at such a price. It's be awesome if Amir ever got one to reviewThat S.M.S.L. DA-8S looks pretty attractive with its balanced inputs, honestly.
Maybe smsl da-8s is for youI would like a decent speaker amp, to add to my E30 L30 combo.
But no Dac, headphone amp, or balanced outputs.
I prefer that the expenses are only in amplifying speakers.
Something like "Allo Volt +"
The only additional thing I would like would be a Bluetooth Dac.
Without exceeding 200 dollars.
I know the Loxjie A30 measures well. In my situation I find it unnecessary to have to buy a dac amp and headphone amp if I already have the E30 and L30. But I would like something that doesn't have all those "extras" that the A30 has. Make amplification a priority.
Let there be two models, one for balanced speakers, and one for unbalanced speakers.
I'm curious about the new SMSL Amps. I hope I like one.
Maybe this post is better on a wish list, I don't know if there is one in the forum.
I can't see any chip amp being markedly better than A30 right now in performance. There are differences in functionality that matter.Since the Loxjie A30 is not readily available nowadays, I wonder which will become available first: that or the SMSL SA400? And I wonder if they will be comparable or if one will be markedly better than the other. Just have to wait...

The hope is that we can get A30 performance, pray slightly better, with another choice for functionality. If they are smart, they will do a power amp version with balanced inputs and very slightly better performance, and charge a big premium for it.![]()
I see. Thanks. I thought the SA400 might be an update of the SA300 since the SA300 has been out for a while.. Actually, I'm not interested in bells and whistles as I have a DAC. I was using the Topping PA3 but I accidentally shorted it when I foolishly changed the speaker wire without turning it off. Now my Topping PA3 does not work and I'm looking for a replacement. It seems that these newer units are better. The sa300 is at the same price point as A30. You can expect SA400 to be at a premium compared to SA300 and have more bells and whistle

I also don't know enough about the chips to say for sure if the other ones can reach this level of performance, but it seems like it should be possible. With lower powered op amps, the implementation is far more important than the selection. Chips like this are a little more complex, so neither reality would surprise me.Your comment is interesting. Does that mean the MA12070 chip in the Loxjie A30 outperforms other chips, e.g. TPA3251 (when both are as well implemented as they can be)? I am not an expert in this topic. We don't know yet what chip the SA400 will use, do we? Might the SA400 use a better performing chip?
