What does this mean for the PAC (premium audio company) brands? (no one know at this stage!)
Agreed

I don't see anything in the products currently offered by the buyer, Gentex that would suggest they have a use for the home audio assets of Voxx International. I hope I am wrong.

There's an article that looks at some of the ramifications here:

Key thing is, the individual companies (Klipsch, Onkyo) are likely worth more, than what Gentex has paid for the whole swag.

This looks like a fire sale.

Major question might be, did they buy the debt as well? and based on fire sale pricing of the companies and assets, will that provide a secure (and profitable) future for those companies?

Well that part of the pie is interesting, what about Masimo's?

Thanks. The article mentions Onkyo is launching a 're-branding' of itself. I suspect Gentex was privy to this plan and this gives me more hope Gentex has plans for home audio (even if it means a sale to another company).

Voxx has a big automotive division, both as OEM and after-market. A lot of vehicle safety products as well. This might be what Gentex wants, primarily.

Yes - that is the obvious synergy....

But then, much like Masimo, one wonders what happens with the AV brands? where to PAC?

Well that part of the pie is interesting, what about Masimo's?
Well, there were no rumours out there, until suddenly we had the Gentex announcement...

There have been no rumours around Masimo/Sound United either... but it could well happen in a similar manner.

They might have bought them for the names. The last few products from Onkyo and Pioneer were certainly underwhelming and had serious performance issues. Kinda sad if you think about how what used to be respected names in the audio industry are now churning out below average products. Don't think I'd consider buying from them and I still have my SX-850 and DTR70.4

No rumors for this, but we did see the Pioneer brand licensing lapse. This is promising in that it suggests that Gentex is buying actual tech not just branding.

Cars may want to seek differentiation in their car audio, so potentially Klipsch or Onkyo will work there. Pioneer is still involved in actual car audio (OEM) so maybe Voxx had to give it up in order to compete with them in the automotive space.

If Harman car audio isn’t doing well, maybe there is room for Gentex.

The most interesting thing is that Gentex has 89% market share for rear view mirrors. That means that have a seat at the table with all of the big companies, which is easier than a startup.

VOXX ended up owning AR (turntables and speakers from 60s 70s which are still highly valued) but let it die through economic disinterest, probably the same for Onkyo and Pioneer

My DTR70.4 fried its DSP.... I still have it, keep hoping I'll find a spare DSP board....

But the RZ70 / DRX8.4 are worthy replacements for the DTR70.4 - the RZ50 and the rest of the lower end are more mass market...

Yes, but the AR speakers would compete with Klipsch (they sold off Jamo) - on the other hand, AR would be a great brand to come back with a different type of speaker (sealed acoustic suspension.... which is what they were famous for) ... but I doubt that the market is ready to switch gears in speakers - ports are de rigeur today.

And TT's - well they remain niche -but it could be an interesting niche if they wanted to brush off AR.

(Onkyo had some very nice TT's back in the heyday too!)

I think for any chance for AR to come back, MK Sound would have needed to be back first (especially w/their pedigree at Skywalker Ranch)!

Old badges tend to be lost in memory, especially in this current generation of "what have you done for me lately"!

Gentex bought low and Masimo bought high. I think the sale of Sound United will be dragged out...

Bummer about your DTR. At the time I got it it was one of the few AVRs that had the ability to do real biamping with DSP xovers for my DIY fronts. Zone 2 now drives my DIY center with external DSP xover.

I have no idea what I'll replace it with when the time comes.

Voxx International acquired the Klipsch Group in 2011 for $166 million and the assets of Onkyo for $30.8 million (plus assumption of liabilities) in 2021. According to Seeking Alpha, the $7.50 share price offered by Gentex gives Voxx International an 'aggregate enterprise value' of about $196 million. Earlier in 2024, Voxx sold its' accessory business for $25 million and also sold the Jamo audio brand. An article in 'CE-Sphere' via MSN says with this acquisition, Gentex will acquire Voxx Inernational's Eyelock iris biometric technology. I wonder how much value Gentex has assigned to its' newly-acquired brands of home audio.

The article in CE-Sphere says Gentex's acquisition of Voxx International is drawing comparisons to Masimo's acquisition of Sound United. An article in 'Stock Titan' quotes Gentex on why they acquired Voxx International:

I wonder what 'profitability improvements' Gentex plans to deploy. Onkyo USA's website appears to have pared their offerings of 2-channel gear to the TX-8470 receiver, a CD changer and a power amp.
