MoFi SourcePoint 10 - Review & Measurements by Erin

You are such a teaser... or, you just forgot to let us me swoon over a photo of their x-over board.;)
And here are pictures of that, plus now those speakers are mine.:D

No lamps in amp Luxor 7082A yet, as seen in the pictures but it will come. I test the sound by pushing the speakers into the corners of the room.

Plus some light, even live ones. MERRY CHRISTMAS.:D
(I know lazy to fix fixed cable with tape but never mind the same)

i would have liked to seen even more compact sourcepoint 888 (or 88), smaller depth of a speaker is important to me, but still this is great addition and look at that price!

Just as well for Andrew he didn’t design a 6” driver as imagine playing Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast through them?, you’d have a new PMRC lobby group being formed and it'd really piss off the nutjobs.

Hey Andrew?…………. would you mind building a 6“ drive unit?…..I have a plan.

:D

i would buy it... it would make it width-wise compact as well :)
but i do really like those bass drivers, it reminds me of those lovely dynaudios, that were so good (small xmas) but i liked those bass drivers a lot, so i def. keep an eye out for these 888 for sure, i'm from europe so i need to seek for a good price, 888 are heavy so transport cost are probably higher here.

The 888 are tempting me...I run Dynaudio in main now but I could live with these by there side. There 5k for pair ?

A smaller sourcepoint would approach the design of several of his past speakers at Elac. I think he did say when he announced the SP10 that he wanted to take all the things he had done before and do something new. Part of why he suggested the 10 "worked" is because with a large cone he could keep the cone movement to a minimum, providing a relatively constant behavior of the cone as a horn for the tweeter. From this I would understand that if you keep it a 2-way and continue to shrink the cone then you also have to increase the frequency at which you roll off the bass. You also end up with an LS50, which has probably already been maxed out as a solution by KEF.

Going the other direction, I'm excited by the 888. By taking the lower bass coverage off the 8" cone around the tweeter, that cone needs to move significantly less and hopefully the upper frequencies should be even that bit smoother. I might want them to be a hair taller but we'll see.

I still think there could be a market for a version with maybe a 6.5" driver, that is limited to maybe 60hz or so.

We know most would use a sub anyways, but the 6.5" woofer would allow a good bit more volume and less distortion compared to the LS-50 still.

Erin put in an order for a pair of the 888

Since I don't have access to the raw data, I scanned the graph.
The scores are therefore only (good) approximations.

Here is my take on the EQ.
Please report your findings, positive or negative!

For the score rational your journey starts here
Explanation for the sub score

The following EQs are “anechoic” EQs to get the speaker right before room integration.
If you able to implement these EQs you must add EQ at LF for room integration, that is usually not optional… see hints there.

Score no EQ: 3.3
With Sub: 5.4

Spinorama with no EQ:
  • Slight upward trend
  • great design

EQ design:
I have generated two EQs. The APO config files are attached.
  • The first one, labelled, LW is targeted at making the LW flat
  • The second, labelled Score, starts with the first one and adds the score as an optimization variable.
  • The EQs are designed in the context of regular stereo use i.e. domestic environment, no warranty is provided for a near field use in a studio environment although the LW might be better suited for this purpose.
  • The EQS are really just tuning the HF

Score EQ LW: 5.4
with sub: 7.3

Score EQ Score: 6.0
with sub: 7.8

Lol, your reply reminded me of the line (yt link):
"Good Morning, Mr. Phelps, your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to [insert ridiculously difficult mission here]."
Mr. Phelps always accepted the challenge and never failed to deliver.
I thank you, Sir!

That's a big bummer! I kinda feel swindled.
I just found that the SourcePoint10s I just bought on April 08, have been upgraded to "Master Edition" with improved cross-over and shelving treble control.
Can I purchase a "Retrofit Kit" for my two month old but 'antiquated' SP10s... Please?
No, I am not going ask for your 60 day return policy.
Perhaps, if others also requested such a "Retrofit Kit"; MoFi will provide it.

Andrew Jones mentioned a retrofit kit at Axpona. Cost was maybe $500. IMO based on short listens to both it’s worth it. I never loved SP10 but V10 (substantially the same MF/HF filter as “master”) has better treble IMO.
