ADAM Audio D3V specs price ?

Thats definitely going to make finding a cable much easier as I was only able to find a really expensive one before. Thanks to both of you for the help.
By the way I didn't noticed hiss in the headphones. I tested 30 ohm headphone. I did changed the adapter and now I wonder if that could be it. Maybe I will test.

I actually connected the USB and a hiss is present. On the line in it's barely noticeable at very high levels. I did also tested a usb 1.1 galvanic isolator and didn't made a change. Maybe the 16bit dither is from where the hiss coming from? Anyway not much usable even without the hiss.

With Moondrop Chu 2s its really noticable. With Beyerdynamic DT1990 Pro far less, but with them I hear a constant beeping noise that changes frequency when turning the volume knob. Really not a good HP output.

I also had two instances where the audio suddenly got quieter during normal listening today, I'm assuming this is because the volume knob is way to sensitive.

Right now I'm really on the fence on wether I should return them or not.

I have zero issues the way I use it and the workaround for the volume knob starting point, but I never intended to use the USB or the HP output. I was not sure why these are even there from the beginning, could be it costed them nothing to add and to have more options then pure monitor speaker as what we usually receive from these kind of speakers :)

you can reduce the volume in windows or mac audio from 100 to 50. when use USB you can control the volume over the PC keyboard. most PC keyboard have volume up down knobs and volume mute. The volume knob on d3v have a large dead zone area so that when press it the volume is not change .

normaly balanced input or output system can use with Mono TRS cables and then it is unbalanced and volume is 6 db lower. when you connect analog have you too beeping noise in headphone ? USB is always a problem with groundloops. try put the power cable of the d3v near a plug to the PC which you connect with the USB cable or try a ifi idefender.

I ordered the cables yesterday, so hopefully this should bypass the volume knob issue. Personally, I would have prefered to not have certain features over poorly executed ones. The front would have looked a lot cleaner and maybe the price could have been lower as well. I agree that its a great active speaker, but as a whole this feels like an early adopter product that could be greatly improved with a V2 or Pro version.

I'm aware that Windows has audio controls, and I'm sure they are fine these days, but I still prefer a physical dial.

I have no means to connect analog devices at the moment. Connecting the USB C to my Phone results in the same beeping noise. For me having a decent HP output was a "nice to have" with these speakers, so I'm over it at this point.

thats strange that it is beeping noise when a phone is connect. is it possible that the beep come because the phone transmit data and the d3v is not good shield ?. with the yamaha HS5 i get beeping noise when phone is near. you have no power supply cable in the phone ? . how do you usb c connect to phone ?. the headphone output of the d3v is not high end. I hear hiss when i use in ear superlux hd 387 . they go loud with less power. when i use the superlux HD 681 evo i hear a slight hiss but no beeping it is normal wide band analog hiss. the DT 990 are not very sensitive

Its not this in case you are wondering:

I think the explanation is simply that the headphone output is not very good.

thats very old 2G noise 3G and LTE sound diffrent. here you can hear how 2G 3G and LTE sound. does it sound as in video ?. ,

As they usually are, quite frankly.

I think you'd be better off just getting a decent dongle DAC or other inexpensive DAC-HPA exclusively for the cans. Having a separate device makes managing EQ profiles a lot easier if nothing else.

I might upgrade to something with balanced outs next year, but for now my Topping DX3 Pro is doing fine in the Headphone department.

the DX3 should be ok. you only need RCA female to jack male Adapter. the 6,3 mm mono adapter plug you plug into the d3v and rca cable into the adapter. unsymetric work with d3v correct. i test it with unsymetric cable (mono TRS) from t-racks mini dsp to d3v

see here how it look . there are many that sell such a adapter. this is no promotion. it is only that you see how it should look

I ended up buying short RCA to TS cables from Sommer cable and they work great. Bypassing the internal DAC definitely seems like the way to go with these speakers. Not sure how to best describe this, but when using USB C they sound like they are half asleep below a certain threshold. Using the external DACs volume knob sounds much more consistent across the entire range.

Btw. Is it normal for some level of white noise to be audible at normal listening distance? This happens regardless of input. I know this isn't uncommon with AV Receivers and stuff like that, but I kind of expected tolerances to be tighter when it comes to Monitors.

The internal DAC cannot be bypassed.

Using the analog input just means inserting an additional D->A and A->D conversion into the signal chain, that aren't there when using USB in.

These may well be audibly transparent, but they cannot by definition improve fidelity.

That odd, is this some kind of cost saving measure to not have to include a second signal chain?

In that case I guess its really just the volume knob thats dragging these down for me.

DSP is an integral part of the D3V's design, so any analog input must first be converted back to digital for the D3V to function.

If you dislike the built-in knob, then you can use an external USB volume knob instead.

Wouldn't that be the same as reducing the volume in windows?

Correct.
Same underlying mechanism as the D3V knob, just in another form factor, and likely with a slightly different volume curve.

I remember back when people used to run Foobar with wasapi plugin to bypass the windows audio mixer, so I was always hesitant to use it for volume control.
