Wharfedale Linton 85th Anniversary speaker review & measurements by Erin's Audio Corner

I used a Polk S30 for a week and then bought a Wharfedale EVO 4C as a center, it was a huuuuuge improvement.
The 4C is pretty big but being a 3 way speaker it sound great and it has the same walnut finish as my Lintons

Since I mostly watch TV by myself, and sit in the sweet spot, I decided to forgo the center and just use phantom center. Music sounds better because the Lintons are better than the polk s35, and i don’t find a big difference in vocal clarity

ok guys what amp should i buy to power the WL85? I need to be able to plug into it my TV and either laptop or turntable. Bluetooth would be ideal so I can play some spotify with my phone too. Would like the amp to cost less than the WL85 if possible

Room is about 4x6m but volume will be moderate considering I share rather thin walls with the neighbors.

Thanks!

Tip:

Not so big room, or medium room. You don't play at such a high volume you say. Okay then this one suits you well. A good amp with many good features. Goes well stylistically with Lintons. :)
Price maybe on the limit of your budget?

The Leak stereo 230 comes to mind, pairs nice and enough juice. Not sure if pricing is the same as in EU, but they go for around 1000 usd here. Another option is the WiiM amp, especially if you don't play that loud.

I really liked the sound of the Lintons at Audio Element. Just like what I started off building as a teen (but with better crossovers because I didn't know what the hell I was doing...then as an actual loudspeaker engineer I learned more and more and felt like I knew less and less! What a rabbit hole... o_O ). Presuming no sub (or even with) your bass is unlikely to be flat. So you should really get room correction, which sadly few 2-channel products have. Actually a used receiver with like Audyssey XT32 Pro or ARC Genesis or Dirac could be a good way to go, no harm running an AVR just for stereo. The more compact WiiM Amp also has some EQ function, should have more than enough power for your needs. Not sure if some low frequency issues in the initial testing have been resolved. Yamaha has that intelligent variable loudness and YPAO room correction.

I use a Yamaha A-S1200 and have replaced it's power amp with a Fosi V3 for a few weeks. Didn't hear a difference at all. So i guess it matters less than i thought.

In the end it's about functionality, i think. Obviously the bass/treble knobs, the large volume knob, the remote and many in and outputs on the A-S1200 win over the meager Fosi V3. But in terms of amplification alone there wasn't any difference i could detect.

Hi there,
I am considering getting a pair of Lintons but not sure if the space in my living room is enough. I could place the speakers with a 2 meter distance from each other, 50 to 100 cm from the rear wall and 50 cm from the side wallas. Has anyone here tried them with this or similar positioning? Would that be enough?

Thank you so much in advance

I have a similar positioning, only a bit more from walls, say 110 cm from rear wall and 80 from side walls. I think it is fine. I had a nasty dip between 60 and 80 hz. I addedd a couple of small subs and it went away

Cheers! :)
PS: Do you think the Lintons can be improved with EQ? I mean, using an UMIK-1 and REW, do they work fine with DSP?

There are no speakers that don't work fine with DSP.

DSP does not depend on some attribute of the speaker to work.

Virtually all speaker systems can be improved with a UMIK-1 and REW.

Whether they will be improved, depends on your proficiency at measuring and correcting speaker systems.

Thanks! I asked this question because on Erin's reviews I think I often heard that, when a speaker has good linearity, it reacts good to EQ (of course I might have misunderstood it since English is not my mother tongue)

It's specifically the directivity index, or the difference between on- and off-axis response, which makes some speakers especially EQ friendly.

A smooth and predictable off-axis response, across the entire frequency range, is ideal and will ease the correction process.

Uneven off-axis response is one attribute which cannot be fixed using EQ.

Uneven off-axis response however, does not mean that the speaker cannot be improved using EQ, just that doing so is a bit more difficult.

Sure, I have always used Rew. But Eq is very effective in addressing peaks, while dips cannot be filled up with Dsp
Many dips can be filled up with DSP. Only bass nulls cannot.

You are right. I had a null due to an axial mode, I think. Indeed, my subs are located along the other dimension of the room, at the middle of opposing walls.

Want to buy a pair with. In Russia they are about 1000 dollars with stands.
I have a strange question: are there any sort of... different versions of speakers? I noticed that mid and low drivers can be screwed with hex, torx or philips screws on different photos and youtube videos.

I have Phillips screws. I've read that the screws of earlier batches of the Lintons went straight into the wood and that a later point the screw holes had a metal thread. Maybe this explains why there are different type of screws? I'm guessing that I have metal threads because I had to tighten my screws like 5 times before they were tight. That's the only difference so I wouldn't worry that there are Lintons on the market with a different sound.

I have purchased dirac and an umik1
Anyone have already done roomEa with these speakers? Do you recommend using all full range freq correct or just under certain range and in which?

Also should I use 0 degree or 90 degree for the mic positioning? And dirac courve default is good enough or should I use other (like harman).

Thanks!!
