New driver version 4.86 for the D90 and other Topping DACs (E30, D10, D10s, D50, D50s, D70, D90, DX3 Pro, DX7 Pro) to better support Windows 10 v2004 http://www.tpdz.net/newsinfo/435189.html

I was having driver issues with the DX7 Pro on Win10 2004 so hopefully this fixes it

In VirusTotal, two engines detect trojans in this driver package. One of the engines that detect malware in it is by BitDefender, who are usually pretty reputable.

https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file...fd4509d5f199ab59a7ce15c791d68e4c1bb/detection

If you then dig down, three engines detect the file ASIOProxyInstall-0.7.2.exe, inside the package, as malware.

These detections make me wary of installing this update.

EDIT: Ran it through another analysis site, as follows.

ASIOProxyInstall-0.7.2.exe:

I downloaded the driver <.zip> you linked to and I unzipped it all the way to the ASIOProxyInstall-0.7.2.exe and my Bitdefender security suite advised no issues. If that helps?

Could you say what this all means? Is it just carelessness... or something suspicious?

I installed the ASIO driver for Foobar and the ASIOProxyInstall-0.7.2.exe and Bitdefender gave no warning.

I'm not sure. Sometimes files do get false positives from one or two engines, but usually the lesser-known ones. The Bitdefender Theta one got my attention. And that one executable file getting a detection from three engines is a bit unusual too.

It doesn't prove conclusively that there's anything bad going on, but there could be. It is something to take into account before deciding whether to run the installer.

I will probably wait a bit to see whether Topping updates the file or VirusTotal stops showing detections (which sometimes happens with engine updates after false positives).

I've used security suites other than Bitdefender and got false positives sometimes. I don't know for sure but perhaps you are getting a false positive warning about the ASIOProxyInstall-0.7.2.exe Perhaps try the online Bitdefender security scan and see if you are still getting the warning.

You should not need high gain for your HD800, trust me. See what levels you get in low, then if not loud enough try medium, then try high. Only time I use high gain is with my HE6se cans.
Should be no difference between 4.4 and XLR.
As far as volume, only you can figure out what volume you like, there is no one "setting" that is best.

hmm what different between gain (low, med, high) vs volume knob?

so no need set high on gain?
just set on low/med and increse the volume knob?

There is no one proper setting, that's the joy of these amps, you can have fun experimenting.
Try it on low gain, and adjust the volume to your liking.
If not loud enough, try medium gain, and adjust volume to your liking.
If still not loud enough, try high gain, and adjust volume to your liking.
If high gain is not loud enough, go see your nearest audiologist for some hearing aids, because you are deaf.

+ the D90 should be set to DAC mode so that it's volume is fixed on 0db IMO.

Thanks. I'm leaning towards it being a false positive. One of those sites I linked gives a detection history, and this particular file seems to be quite old and to have been detected as malicious on and off by just a few engines for years. If it were genuinely malicious one might expect more engines to have picked up on it by now.

Start with unity gain, and for balanced out with HD800s it really should be more than enough. But if it's not, go to high gain, and if your volume pot goes to 3 o'clock or lower just switch to low gain. D90 I would go with -3db.
