Let's stop calling Class D amplifiers "efficient" when they are not.

Tell me, how much power do your class D amplifiers consume, just idling along, doing nothing, or even playing slightly loudly? Measure it and be shocked. Report back here with your results.

Class D "efficiency" is utter and complete bullsh#t.

Wooping 27 watt with amp enabled,19 watt with amp disabled on idle,0.5 watt on stand by (automatically after 13 min without signal) .

As for when it works the graph below seems nice but stretch it enough for the first 50-100 watt and...

I just knew that class D amps were devil's invention. I think I'll have to go and find some well built Japanese stereo amp from 80's that weights 30kg but has real character.
80s? I went back to class A push-pull triodes. Old school FTW!

Bigger than 86m³? Cuz it does that very well :D
Just about with 3.2 m ceiling, treated mostly, but terribly inefficient woofers (scan speak) and classical music as a gender.
(I have tried smaller, believe me and I could dance by their clipping light rhythm :) )

XLS 1502 uses 18 watts at idle, but also when playing. Due to the limited power handling of my LS50's it never goes above 18 watts when playing. When I had B&W towers to draw more than 18 watts it had to reach very high levels. It probably costs me $24 per year to not have a low power standby mode.

It was a long time that we didn't get "Class D is bad" thread. I was somehow missing it. Or not.
An Arthur 4215/E2 eats less than 0.5 W in standby, 12 W when idling. In idling 9 W are eaten by the power supply, not related to class D, and 3 W by the 2 1ET400A modules that happen to be class D. In my book it's quite efficient.

... 3 W by the 2 1ET400A modules ...
Wow, that is not bad at all.
I just checked my 6-channel Hypex-Ucd poweramp. Those 2 modules (3-channel each with SMPS) plus the dsp consume 90W. Still ok, but not that good.

Now here is what John would call a real man's amp. Rated 125 W into 8 ohms (and weighs 101 lbs). Idle power consumption 230 W per channel (it is a mono amp).

It's ironic when old guys want amps they can no longer lift.

/Trollin, oh yeah
