Nope I don’t want a subwoofer at all. Although I do miss the slim subwoofer I had from Focal but that ended up breaking
. Since I got tinnitus I lost all interest in subs even though I am looking for something that plays into the 40hz area. Desk wise I 100% don’t want/need a sub but for movies in the bigger room it would be nice to find something that has maybe 2 times the output of something like the JBL 305p’s if that‘s possible but even that isn’t a dealbreaker at all.
Although I would give up the 40hz bass in speakers if I could find a 2.0 system that could give me holographic sound.
I've got IN8 but because of the size of my room and where I need to place the speakers, I always end up with a null at 80 or 90 or 100Hz, and that just make them sound pretty weak on their own. I had the same null when I had 6" speakers though, so it isn't a capability problem, it's a room problem. The 8" might have a bit more bass at 50-60Hz than the 6" speakers had, but not enough to "overcome" the hole between 70-110Hz (wherever it falls). So if your room behaves the same, different size of basic ported speakers won't help. You can test if you have a null with a measurement mic, or you could try room sim feature in REW and see what it suggests.
There is another way to get deep performance and overcome such a null, and that is with a relatively expensive cardioid speaker such as
D&D 8c. If you want all the performance from just 1 pair of speakers, that's probably the sort of thing you should be looking at. Cardioid have "directional" bass that can "overcome" room modes (modes are one of the causes of nulls). Also they have heavy DSP built in to get that deep bass performance.
Also with the IN8 and their coaxial driver, you need to have the speakers toed in or out so that you aren't listening on-axis, because the on-axis response isn't ideal. This is fine for a single listening position, like how I use mine on my computer and have them towed in only slightly from being parallel with room, but if I move left and right of my main listening position (like if it were a 3 seater couch), then quickly the nearby speaker becomes overly loud and the stereo image fails (ie if I move left, the left speaker is now basically on axis and quite overpowering). But sitting in the MLP it sounds very good. I've played some games recently with the speakers on and they sound good too - good vocal locations and effects.
So the IN8 are great for the price but might not do what you want on their own (depending upon your exact situation).
