JL Audio 8w3v3 for home sub

My car just got totaled in an accident along with my JL audio subwoofer box. It was a ported box but I’m wondering how the speakers would do in a sealed enclosure for a subwoofer in my bedroom.

Sealed 8" even in a small room won't reach low. That is a driver you will want to run in a ported box, and then high-pass below the port tuning frequency to protect the driver.

You have the limitations of 8” and your listening room being bigger than your car. That said, the JL Audio subwoofers are really good and it’s a good way to enhance your listening experience if your primary system only has a 6” woofer for example. It’s definitely worth the time/effort in my opinion.

The JL Audio Fathom series which has glowing reviews even with a v1 amp that failed a lot (v2 is better) is basically a car automotive sub in a pretty box and fancy HT amp.

0.2L Vd won't shake the room at high levels, but is that the goal in a bedroom system? Will any woofer make useful 20Hz, if peak SPL is 80dB?

@TankTop, perhaps you should add more details, such as main speakers, amp, room size, desired extension. If your goal is ~35-40Hz at moderate SPL from a smaller box (maybe 15-20L net), go for it. If you want more output later, make that box your secondary sub to address room modes, either in the bedroom or main system.
