Reminds me of one of those investigations into governmental cost over-runs back more than 40 years ago. They were paying something crazy like $700 for mechanical pencils. They were for aircraft crews. They did have some extra requirements for temperature extremes and g-loadings. Nevertheless it was a standard off the shelf Pentel or some such. They were buying portable personal communication devices designed to milspec.

I wondered why they didn't just buy Fisher Space pens. They were more expensive than a Bic, but not $700. Good enough for Nasa since Apollo seemed good enough for any other use case to me.
