You’re a MiniDisc fan but don’t exactly understand why?

I loved my MiniDisk gear! I started with it about 1996. Bought a Sony starter kit with the E40 player and MDS-500 recorder. At the time I was travelling a lot and it was way better than CDs for mobile. I had a few portable players. I used it for about 15 years.

I only gave up on it when I changed jobs and no longer needed a portable solution. Also, by then I had a music server at home that held a FLAC library.

I love Minidisc, probably the last best recordable physical format. I mostly put Bandcamp purchases onto MiniDisc via the great Web MiniDisc Pro, and listen via a Sony deck or Sony portable NETMD machine.

I've just been comparing an album with Sennheiser HD560S plugged directly into a Sony NETMD machine, and then also into a Fiio Q11/Macbook Air. Even though the streamed music was hi-res, in comparison to the MiniDisc's lossy ATRAC, I couldn't really notice any night and day differences. I guess it shows how nailed on the sound quality of MiniDisc was.
