Every week we get someone asking what is the best headphone to get under a certain budget, and and we try to understand what they are after, and help them as much as we can. What if someone comes and says I have a lot of headphones, I don't need any, but I want to get one anyway as a collectible, which headphone would you recommend and why? I am asking for a friend.

My Audeze LCD-2s are very laid back, if that's your thing.

Which version?

Don't have the LCD-2 but I have an LCD-X and I think everyone who is seriously into headphones should have an LCD indeed, either LCD-2 or LCD-X / XC.

Sheesh, I got them a long time ago. Probably the original version.

As a collectible?
One that a favourite artist used + that looks super cool -> hang a picture of the artist with said artifact on his/her head -> let your friends wear it, only a few seconds.

Maybe buy something that you like the appearance of, or something unique looking? Grado makes some wooden ones (expensive, and although some people love the sound they are generally NOT highly-rated for sound).

Shockz OpenRun. Nobody needs to listen to music in the shower, but I've found bone-conduction headphones to be better than a speaker outside the shower.

This is the review that made me purchase this headphone even though I do not need one.

From Amir: "If you are not into headphones but want to know what the fuss is about for no money, buy this $9 headphone and put in my EQ. If you don't fall off your chair with excitement and get your pants wet with drool, I will come over and cancel out your audiophile credentials myself!"

The OLLO S5X looks interesting and each pair comes with a unit specific calibration file (so no need to send them to Amir and drop your trouser in front of ASR :))

For collector high end phones, the original Stax Lambda and Koss ESP9 phones (both are electrostats). I've owned both. They'll even go well with old tube power amps for a vintage setup.

Funnily enough* -- I bought a pair, too, on the strength of that review.

* and isn't funnily a funny word, funnily enough? Or in @pseudoid's case, funnelly enough. ;)

I had a few (and expensive) Sennheiser and Sony headphones.
They were rarely used but stored properly to keep them away from environmental effects.
Unfortunately, those 1980s and 1990s models used some weird-*ss plastics that either deteriorated and/or got sticky.

Better still, the Stax Lambda Pros with tube amp/energizer. I really don't care how these measure (I know their bass is a tad weak). But for space and detail, they're great.
