Topping D30Pro Review (Balanced DAC)

Relay clicking can be considered within specifications. But I don't like it.

How common is this, Peter? It just started happening to one (and only one) of my dacs (albeit one over 10 years old) and is why I am buying this unit...it's quite loud! Of course, it could have its origin in the Roon 1.7 to 1.8 update, who knows, but it is indeed annoying

I was reading about the Bifrost 2 and apparently this was considered normal due to the muting relay. So I guess it is at least not uncommon.

That said, if you DAC is only now developing the issue it could be something else.

Or you can have Roon upsample everything to a common rate.

Using Roon Radio will probably make this more apparent because of the mixed rates.

I can explain. ESS Sabre sounds bright and detailed because they have three "S" letters. AKM sounds neutral, warmer, because they have the Velvet Sound. Cirrus Logic sounds musical and engaging because one guy said that once and another guy repeated after him. Hope that helps.

Engineering: it uses a Cirrus Logic DAC chip.
Marketing: What did the other ones use?
Engineering: AKM and ESS chips.
Marketing: does it make a difference does to the sound?
Engineering: no audible difference.
Marketing: [makes note] ah, then, a Cirrus Logic sound style and slightly different feeling from AKM and ESS chips.
Engineering: [rolls eyes]

Seems to me this might actually hurt initial sales. Buyers are going to be wondering why this would sound or feel different. I think many who may have jumped on it right away, may now be a little standoffish. While waiting to hear from some of the first buyers impressions.

Why not instead, just have said, "D30Pro's Great specs equals great sound" or "The new D30pro Superior specs equals Superior sound"
But hey, what do i know. Guess that's why these marketing guys get paid the big bucks.

Thanks! I actually tried upsampling everything to 96khz but it still happens (seems less loud?) When it occurs, the Matrix goes from 96khz to "No Sample" for a few seconds. Yes, Roon Radio is the worst for it, and I am starting to suspect some code changes in their recent 1.8 update, but really it's a mystery! I am going to assume, haha, that the D30pro will solve EVERYTHING, including world hunger and the meaning of life...

Its marketing with bad translation. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt when the objective measurements are this good.
