is $1700 the kit price? I see the listed on Salk Audio as being about a grand more.

It’s funny reading this… I went to an audio show back in 2019 that had everybody fill out a card… what was your favorite… other questions… My understanding is this is not uncommon.

Is there something wrong with getting to say “I was voted best in show” by the attendees?
I don’t think so.

I'm not sure that it's going to be much less once one adds the cabinets.
Definitely not if you buy the flat packs from Leland’s company. If you buy a sheet of MDF and don’t charge yourself for labor, already have the tools, the cabinets cost you the amount of materials you throw at them.
*shrugs
I had some MDF pre cut at the hardware store to build a pair of BMR cabinets and a pair of another bookshelf. #boom-pow
So that’s less than $25 west-coast bucks in material. ;)

Ah, thanks all. Somewhere down the line I mistakenly had the idea that Philharmonic had stopped production and the speakers were only available in kit form or through Salk.

Which begs the question as to why somebody would pay more for the Salk produced speaker?

Custom finishes. Beautiful cabinets.

He'll even do a front slot port if you ask.

It all depends on where your values are. ;)

While I was ordering through Dennis in 2018, Salk had a couple sets of BMR and Phil 3 going through his shop so all would be matching finish. Believe me, If I had the coin, I'd love to have all my speakers look like this:

The cabinets on some of the Salks are truly beautiful and can be customized. If you look at your speakers as furniture I could easily justify an extra $1k for them

You can purchase the BMR monitor for $1700 plus shipping fully finished and ready to use. Email Dennis at [email protected]. He will process your order.

i am fully convinced that the bmr is one of the finest sounding speakers out there .. and imo *the* best price / performance ratio in the biz... the speaker really was dominant at the show within the speakers i heard.. it sounded bigger and clearer than everything else.. the r3 was very good, so you can guess my opinion of the bmr ...and they are *beautiful* in person.. pure class...

Disagree.
You disagree with this?
I don't know about you, but I listen to my system in my recliners. It's not a really valid test to judge the sound quality of my system as you're wandering about the room or at the computer in the back. It's just not set up that way or sized for that.

So if the folks putting in their votes were all seated as you would normally be and the speakers were set up with that in mind, then I'm ok with that. I'd prefer to not have a sighted bias in play, especially given the large disparity in the beauty of speakers, but there's nothing we can do about that now.

About 70 tracks in Red book CD format. Six genres. One genre per hour. 10 minutes per speaker. 5 speakers per room.

I agree. The BMR Monitors are the best sounding bookshelf speaker I have heard. The bass offered by these speakers is strong and most bookshelves at any price have a hard time keeping up with them. I have them in my office and every time I bring in a new speaker to AB test against them - the BMR is the clear winner. If you fudge the test and use a subwoofer to compensate for the limited bass most bookshelves offer then you get a closer comparison, but the RAAL is a fine driver that's hard to beat. And if you like wide dispersion the BMR midrange is amazing. After having the BMR monitors in a mid-sized room for 2 years I haven't found anything I would replace them with. In a larger room I prefer the Revel F328Be but that speaker is 10x more expensive. It's not a fair comparison at all. :p

The BMR would be a top choice if I had a wider and larger room that would benefit. As it stands I'm sticking with controlled directivity in my more confined space.

What cracks me up is when Revel has a sale on the M105 for $1100 a pair, people get all excited to buy it based on it's preference score. But when I put the M105 next to the BMR monitor it's not even a contest. The M105 bass is weak and distorts easily and the tweeter is average. In fact, the M105 sounds like a BIG step down next to the BMR Monitor. Yet, people get out their hard earned cash and still buy the M105 when the BMR Monitor is so much better AND the user will be satisfied with it much longer than the M105. If the BMR was in every Best Buy they would have considerable trouble selling customers any other bookshelf speaker after a simple listen. :D:facepalm::rolleyes:

I'm not sure that people are buying it based on the preference score, but you're right, the BMR is a much bigger and badder speaker and I would be surprised if it lost that contest.

But you also need to consider where someone is going to use the speaker. Many are using the M105's as surrounds to larger mains, or at a computer, or a small room where super wide dispersion isn't always preferred. Each speaker has its place.
