FreeDSP is a great concept, but i want to see it measured.

https://www.reddit.com/r/oratory1990/comments/10abm9k

FreeDSP applies PEQ in hardware (the chip in the USB-C plug on the cable), the app is just used to send the PEQ parameters to the chip. The DSP options that Oratory1990 is comparing are all done in software. One of the benefits of solutions like the FreeDSP, and the Q5K, is that you don't have to rely on a players or system-wide DSP capability.

Of course, the DSP in the chip could be flaky. I would like to see this tested at some point, but there are not many devices that have capability right now, so it's probably not worth Amir's time developing a test - although a 'PEQ-off' between the RME ADI-2 PRO, Qudelix 5K and FreeDSP might be interesting!

Closing on 2 weeks, no movement yet. How long does a product need to be on back order before you start feeling like a Kickstarter backer?
I cancelled from Shenzhen Audio as it was taking so long and ordered from Shopee (SE Asian Amazon), got it today.

Cable physically is very nice, much nicer than the Tanchjim One DSP cable. Fits IEMs better; Tanchjim will fit any 2 pin but its pins are a little longer than normal so sticks out. It has the plastic protrusions (although not very long) so will fit either recessed or flush 2 pin.

The app is a bit of a work in progress, I downloaded the Chinese one as the English one doesn't seem available right now, I got it here:

It has ten slots, but only peak filters. It only allows integer gain, which is annoying. I saw elsewhere it can't do filters above 10kHz, I didn't test this. I don't tend to want to filter up there anyway.

It has this annoying thing where sometimes it doesn't save, but it still says "Success" as if it had. Fiio's EQ on its BT stuff is like this and it's very annoying, you can't be entirely sure if it saved or not.

When you do get it in, it works. Sounds absolutely fine otherwise, and with IEMs gets way louder than I'd ever be able to use, with the Juzear 41T 20 on Windows is a listenable level.

The variance further up is from different seating, the green one is deeper, it's not from the EQ. So ignore that.

EQ in the device matches simulated EQ:

EQ is set on the cable, and persists, I set the EQ on my phone but measured and am listening to it on my laptop.

If the app gets better, this could be great, it's physically a very nice cable.

EDIT: it also supports up to 32/384kHz which is more than the Tanchjim cable (24/96) or previous DSP IEMs (some locked to 16/48, others configurable up to 24/96). I don't personally feel I need very high sample rates, but it maybe does at least indicate it's using a different chip to the other stuff.

Interesting...

Dual CS43198 DACs in a 75% mechanical keyboard! I wonder if they'll provide PEQ for this as well?
I don't think so, it supports these devices:

I have the Moondrop Dawn Pro and Dawn 4.4, I checked with those, no EQ, just the change filter/gain/light options. There is also now an option to set hardware volume on the Dawn 4.4 which could be useful if you wanted to set it quieter. The DAC in the keyboard I believe is a MoonRiver 2. I have the OG MoonRiver 2, but it didn't work at all (2 Ti didn't work). But I don't think it's adding PEQ to the other DAC dongles anyway.

I have the Space Travel, it doesn't add PEQ to that, just lets you change the three presets (default, more bass, less bass).

On the Jiu, it does allow changing the built in PEQ values, on this chip (which I think is the same as Tanchjim are using in the One and Tanya DSP) it seems you only get 5:

Those stock filters don't seem to match what you'd get with the Jiu starting with either the original Chu or Chu 2. Possibly it's also different from both acoustically. But they are closer to what you'd do starting with the Chu 2, i.e the cutting rather than boosting in the bass.

Anyone tested the sound quality of Free DSP Cable? The cable looks like the TACable Obsidian, I had one and it gives a bit more detail and treble extension

I ordered one - but it hasn't arrived yet - I think it will be an interesting product for the new iPhone (with usb-c) as effectively it provides system wide DSP / PEQ - but I believe the App is a bit of a disaster. I will write up a detailed post when I get it.

Subjectively, it's entirely transparent. Moondrop posted their own APx555 measurements, which were decent. Interestingly, they also claim it's fully balanced. It supports multiple sampling rates up to 384/32.

I tried it with the Tin P2, which is one of the hardest to drive IEMs ever made (spec is 32Ω 90dB/mW, although RAA measured it at 97dB/mW) and it sounds good at 50% volume on Windows.

As I have some 2 pin to 3.5mm adapters, I also tried it with the Edition XS (18Ω 92dB/mW) and it was even louder subjectively, still at 50%, a bit louder than I'd actually listen. And this is not an easy to drive headphone.

More normal IEMs, like the Juzear 41T (48Ω 112dB/mW) which I have it on to add a little bass, 14-15 on Windows is a normal listening volume, 20 is getting on too loud.

So I think it has plenty of power, certainly enough for any IEM in existence.

I believe they were already selling a iem with DSP, not sure if in the cable or in the connector. Very cheap, like 25 euros.(edit:15 euros! makes the apple dongle look expensive) Quarks something?
They do. They're called Quarks DSP, and I bought a pair. I use them in bed late at night hooked up to my ultra cheap Amazon Kindle tablet. The tablet plays Tidal, and I read my downloaded books. They sound very nice, actually. well worth the $15 I paid for them.

The cable sounds exciting. It would eliminate running your streaming music through something like USB Audio Player Pro, because you could just download the correction curve to the cable. Price includes DAC/Amp as well, so a real bargain. Also means any cheap arse phone could be used. No need for a Quad Dac phone just to get your preferred correction curve for your Crinacle Truthear Zeros.

Has anyone managed to import PEQ settings from a file? I've tried the standard format for eAPO like this

Preamp: -4.86 dB
Filter 1: ON LSC Fc 105.0 Hz Gain 2.0 dB Q 0.70
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 73.5 Hz Gain 0.5 dB Q 1.93
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 156.1 Hz Gain -2.4 dB Q 0.79
Filter 4: ON PK Fc 253.5 Hz Gain -0.4 dB Q 1.86
Filter 5: ON PK Fc 755.7 Hz Gain 1.5 dB Q 1.30
Filter 6: ON PK Fc 1484.9 Hz Gain -1.5 dB Q 1.25
Filter 7: ON PK Fc 2192.8 Hz Gain -0.6 dB Q 2.32
Filter 8: ON PK Fc 7417.2 Hz Gain 5.4 dB Q 1.63
Filter 9: ON PK Fc 9526.3 Hz Gain 1.3 dB Q 5.54
Filter 10: ON HSC Fc 10000.0 Hz Gain -3.4 dB Q 0.70

But the Link app will not accept the file. I also tried trimming the number of filters down to 5, but it still won't import.

Results of playing with squig.link to get PEQ settings for my Moondrop Starfields using only peak filters and integer gains limited between 3 and -12 (the app will only accepts these values):

graph.png

Filters saved from squig.link...
Preamp: -2.9 dB
Filter 1: ON PK Fc 20 Hz Gain 3.0 dB Q 0.500
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 180 Hz Gain -3.0 dB Q 0.700
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 830 Hz Gain 1.0 dB Q 1.800
Filter 4: ON PK Fc 1300 Hz Gain -1.0 dB Q 2.000
Filter 5: ON PK Fc 1800 Hz Gain -1.0 dB Q 1.300
Filter 6: ON PK Fc 7500 Hz Gain 3.0 dB Q 0.600
Filter 7: ON PK Fc 11000 Hz Gain 3.0 dB Q 2.000
Filter 8: ON PK Fc 14000 Hz Gain -12.0 dB Q 1.300

I don't know how FreeDSP handles the preamp, there doesn't appear to be any settings for it, but the gain limits suggest to me that FreeDSP is applying some sort of headroom.
