A band mate wants to buy an AVR with builtin streaming for audio and video (he prefers a final simple one box solution) and got a recommendation for the Marantz Cinema 30, which is at his budget limit even without additional surround speakers.

I checked the manual of the Cinema 30 and couldn't find anything about video streaming. Are there any AVRs at all which do this or does he need something else? I use a Sony UHD player for streaming from my NAS, but I have no streaming abos at all, so my knowhow is very limited. Any help is appreciated.

What kind of video and audio does he want to stream and how does he want to stream it?

YouTube, Netflix, Spotify and co, or local files via Plex/DLNA?

Use the AVR standalone with just the remote for navigating and choosing media, or just as an endpoint with a PC/tablet/phone hosting the UI?

No such thing as an AVR with video streaming nowadays. Only Pioneer was stupid enough to make such an AVR and unfortunately, I was stupid enough to buy one 14 years ago. It could even display the video on its built-in LCD display, but it just couldn't support most of the video formats and it sounded like $hit. It was the SC-LX90

I ended up selling it to a repair shop for $500 a few years ago.

Just add a decent media player. Maybe in the future an Android-TV based AVRs would become popular and also offer audio/video Chromecast and Airplay support...

Probably all if then, but I don't think he actually knows enough about it to make a senseful choice ...

He has a NAS but without a media server, just ftp or smb.

He has an iPad so this would be my recommendation to use as controller, because he has only a Beamer which he then don't need to switch on for streaming audio. Since I know nothing about Apple which simple to use app would be a good choice?

Current state: A few weeks ago I lent him my old AVP (Marantz AV7701) and two Mackie HR824 for playing around. He managed to play CDs. This week I setup the network connection (too complex for him) so now he can play music from the iPad via Airplay (Internet radio app).

The sensible choice would likely be to buy an Apple TV box and plug that into the AVR.

Though it would be useful to figure out first what and how your mate actually wants to stream.
