We had that problem in grad school in the lab conference room/kitchen. My PhD advisor used to refer to the technique as "[dish]washing by fermentation." :)
I intentionally let 2 tupperware items rot in the fridge as a science project to see how long it lasted. I tossed the tupperware after for fear it might be infested in micro-scratches and such.
