Not a single item, but a dealer demo system which, IIRC consisted of Mark Levinson ML-7 pre, ML-2 monoblocks, ML-modded Quad ESL-57 speakers w/Decca ribbon tweeters. It was the first time I heard a setup which sounded like someone could actually be singing in the next room (but was pretty much limited to solo vocalist). Around the time, I was offered a secondhand pair of ML-2s for 1000 USD, and thank goodness I passed, because they'd likely have been money-pits with too many sharp edges and visually striking, but super-uncomfortable handles.1. Name the first piece of gear that led you down the hi-fi rabbit hole?
Bang & Olufsen Master 43K table radio. A WWII-era product made during the nazi occupation period, when B&O were forced to get creative and minimize use of Bakelite (sanctioned) or anything deemed of strategic importance by the occupiers. A piece of history, but kind of large, and once restored, what will I actually use it for? I realized I missed answering this question:
7. What's a stereo product that people love that you just don't understand?
Some peoples continued obsession over solid state, amplifiers, and DACs. Solid state amplification was a solved problem long ago: we’ve had transparent, neutral solid state amps for many decades. Watching the amount of time people put in to specs oggling and salivating about the next hypex or PURIFI amp or whatever leaves me perplexed in that regard. Same goes for the amount of attention some people pay to DACs, which seem to me to be a similarly solved problem.
(for me, since neutral solid application has been around forever, the more interesting space is where amplifiers actually are more likely to sound different, which is why I’m more curious about different tube amplifiers than solid amplifiers)
2. Name the favorite piece of hi-fi equipment that you currently own.
Linn LP12 with Akito 2 tonearm and Adikt cartridge.
If I remember correctly, Valhalla was discontinued in 2004. My LP12 is a slightly newer Majik LP12, and it has the integrated Majik power supply. It works fine for me.What power supply do you have? I had a LP12 with the factory Valhalla power supply. The switch finally died on me (this is probably an 80’s era vintage). I thought about replacing the switch but picked up
