Welcome New Members to ASR, introduce yourself here.

Wait, did I really just stumble upon an audio forum that strives to be truly objective and not have members constantly promoting snake oil, condescendingly explaining that you need 1000 hours before you bond with your equipment or having an e-pen15 measuring contest by telling everyone about the $10K dollar cables or power conditioner with vitamin e that they recently upgraded to? I must be dreaming! Joking aside, I recently found myself disillusioned after spending some time browsing a few forums including avsf*rum and found my way over here after some googling. Reallly liking the scientific posts I'm reading, especially the stickies, the amazing subwoofer/speaker tracking spreadsheets, and perhaps most of all, the general vibe of the community. Thank you kindly @amirm and everyone else who helps keep this place going!

I have a question for any old-timers or senior members around here, if one wanted to post about Audyssey calibration or related tools/scripts/optimizations (i.e. free/open source), without it coming across as "promotion" or anything, where might it be best to start a thread like that? Would it be in under room acoustics and general speaker discussions? Not planning on it right now, but asking out of curiosity.
I do believe that people bond with their equipment, and I think that can be a good thing.

While it is good to have objective standards, most of us wind up on a budget and compromising.

I think sanity requires learning to hear through imperfect systems. Isn’t that what breaking in really is?

Oh, I totally take your point. My ears/eyes/brain are equally my best friends and enemies with A/V, haha. The fact that I overwhelmingly prefer my Sennheiser HD 800 S after applying parametric EQ tuning over stock, yet do this in a way that also focuses on the Harman target and frequency response and largely objective work of oratory1990, is a great example of complimenting subjectivity + objectivity. I was using humour in my initial post, but I have met my share of (often intelligent) people who blatantly dismiss ABX testing, double-blind comparisons or evidence-based discussion in favour of biased beliefs such as that they have some pseudo-spiritual connection to their room, chair, headphones, speakers, or vacuum tubes, and completely ignore or reject any objective discussion or attempts to analyze/test equipment without emotions. This applies to many aspects and areas in life, but it is a breath of fresh air to find a community that focuses on truth and facts through evidence in an area and hobby they are passionate about. :)

Hi everyone, new member here but longtime reader of the reviews and discussions.
Looking forward to participating in some of the fun talk. I greatly appreciate everything you all do for the hi-fi world! Especially appreciate that this forum isn't promoting $8000 boxes of dirt for grounding.
One of my friends was interested in building a good system for the first time recently, and pointing him to the excellent reviews and discussions here worked out nicely.
I often go between the US and Japan for work, my setup is in Japan however.
Nice to meet you all and hope you all had a great new year as well.

Ha, Amir tested one of those for kicks. Safe to say... it did nothing at all. :D

I've read a lot of the snake oil tests here but hadn't seen this one, this one takes the cake!! Thanks for the fun read, it's impressive what people are willing to buy, and the "improvements" heard by our creative minds are interesting too.

Good morning everyone,

I’m a new member here, and I must say this is an interesting community with lots of useful information. Great job!

I consider myself a music enthusiast—I can listen to music for hours on end, with my eyes closed, and still be fully awake—but I’ve never been an ‘audiophile,’ though I do appreciate good quality sound.

Lately, I’ve been testing and buying some equipment for our living room. I’m a fan of omnidirectional speakers, especially in rooms with challenging acoustics. Since I left my Pro-Ject Class D amp there, I recently picked up a Sansui from the '70s as a temporary solution… and I’m surprised by how good it sounds! It only has 30W at 8 Ohms, driving my Dali speakers, which are rated at 6 Ohms with 90 dB sensitivity and a recommended power range of 40-150W.

Have a nice day everyone.

Hi everyone,
I’m new to the forum! I studied physics in 2007 and have been working in musical instrument acoustics ever since. Now, I’m based in Portugal, where I make violins. I can already tell I’m going to love this forum; I have a lot of research ahead and equipment to develop. Looks like I’ve found the right place!

Hi there from Oldham, UK! I've been following this awesome site for years but only just registered to show my support. I have spent many countless days reading reviews that @amirm and others have shared and lost many countless hours reading the passionate comments and debates that have followed. I love listening to most types of music, and though Jazz-funk is probably my go-to, rock, metal and classical are also frequently played with anything in between. I equally love hifi gear, computers, and any other any nerdy equipment, as well as going to gigs.

Hey - So glad I found this forum!

I'm a 68 yo gray guy. I retired nearly 6 years ago from my job in IT here on the NC Outer Banks. I first got interested in audio about 60 years ago when I found there were several old boxes of 78s stashed away in the hall closet that could be played on the mostly unused Philco wooden cabinet radio/record player that was stashed away somewhere as well. I really enjoyed the old jazzy big band albums! Glenn Miller In the Mood was my favorite.

At some point I begged for a tape recorder so much that an old monstrous surplus Reel 2 Reel unit was brought home and I would record things from the radio station. And then one day mom brought home a new Magnavox cabinet model STEREO! It folded down from the front and had speakers that folded out from the side that I eventually figured out could be lifted from the hinges for better separation. I think she initially bought two 33 LPs with it - Sergeant Barry Sadler The Ballads of the Green Beret and Connie Francis - something like Greatest Hits or Best Of. It wasn't my favorite music but at my age I didn't have any way to go shopping for new vinyl. Shortly after I think we got a copy of Meet the Beatles. TBH, I was never that impressed with them. But eventually I did come around to rock and soul.

I knew a few people that had consoles at home. And I was like "Gee - why can't we have one of those? And then In my teens I discovered a high end audio shop on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh where we lived. And WOW! I always loved hearing the equipment and eventually bought my own system for my room that replaced the hand me down 8 Track I had bought from someone. I can't remember exactly what the new system was comprised of.

And finally - getting around to my point here. I never considered myself a true audiophile. When it came to those super fine points that the salesmen at the stores and sometimes friends would demonstrate for me I was like "Ummm, OK. I guess I'll have to take your word for it." And I always wondered were there any true scientific tests that demonstrated the difference in connectors, speaker wire, etc that some claimed to hear and I couldn't. I was pretty good with math and science and had some interest in electronics and it just didn't make sense to me. And I couldn't hear it.

So here I am finally. So happy to find this forum and those that are like minded! Finally, I feel validated and vindicated! And I'm learning so much from the posts and reviews here!

So what I've settled for the past few years -
A Denon CD changer that I bought in a thrift store. A Denon AVR 1082 that I got from a friend that owns an audio repair shop and does warranty work for Denon and a few other brands. A pair of Infinte Slope speakers from the same guy that rebuilt them and used them for himself at home and at the shop for several years. I walked in and heard them and was blown away! I first heard those at the shop on Hillsborough Street back in the day augmented with a Sub. Those and Maggies were always my favorites. A Polk audio powered Sub. A few other vintage pieces and bookshelf speakers and some somewhat more modern powered speaker systems that provide music synched throughout the house using several Chromecast Audios that I picked up (and even bought spares when they were being discontinued for a pittance). I got rid of all my old vinyl a number of years ago. I had a young friend that was getting into it and gave it all to him along with his first nicer system for Christmas one year. Including that original Meet the Beatles we got when I was a kid!

I'm most always on the lookout for equipment and I'm in the process of making some changes/upgrades. I'll post questions more appropriately elsewhere. I doubt anyone is still reading at this point anyway!

Have a nice day everyone.
Welcome and very nice. My dad passed last October and I inherited his Sansui 7070. I intend to get it working, but haven't had the funds at the moment. I love the vintage stuff, even though I'm vintage now. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

Well, hi?
You probably noticed the join date - I'm one of those long time lurkers that who keeps unable to find a reason to break the silence of lurking, until one time it's an oops.
My focus/interest probably into in-ear monitors than headphones and speakers due to IRL constrains.

I'm more of an audiofool than an audiophile.
Create an account to lurk and reading more stuff, so I can be less of a fool over time.
Still feels like one.

Other than that, to whoever stumbled upon this, hope your day/night a nice one.

Mate, don't feel like that. :)

The fact you've come back to your ASR account with the intention of learning more is an excellent move.
