Hi ASR Folks,

Today, we mark a new milestone, about one year after this one :

We just reached 60k members by now.

Thank you @amirm for creating such an amazing place 8 years ago (time flies..). And, of course, kudos to our moderators, @BDWoody, @AdamG, @Jimbob54 for keeping it as friendly and educative as possible.

Happy holidays, Folks !

meh. 47k of them are bots, spammers, and scammers.

;)

ahem. In all seriousness -- in an age where most interesting forum-type chatter has moved to places like Reddit and the scorched earth of the social media platforms, the high level of activity on this forum remains refreshing.
Most of the old-fashioned audio forums are moribund and/or cesspools chockablock with knuckle-dragging tribalists.
(there are a couple of exceptions)

EDIT:
@cfil -- you there? Stop by & say hello! :)

What I like about this place (aside from the nice shag pile carpet and frilly curtains) is I think we are generally all bound together by a similar philosophy which means our broad and far reaching discussions tend to stay on track, focused and are educational.

Sure we might disagree on some technical miniature at times but at least we are all on the same bus heading in the same direction.

It's hard to have meaningful conversations on many other forums due to the diverse outlook of those forum members... many of whom tend to have some degree of derision for ASR and our objectivist "manifesto"

Congrats to Amir and the mod team! To me, ASR is an example of what can happen when:

  • Someone has resources to spare and puts them towards the good of the community instead of profit (thanks @amirm !)
  • We avoid talking about politics
  • A community has high standards for substantive and respectful discourse
  • Hard evidence is considered "sacred" in some sense
  • Genuine experts share knowledge, and "experts" mostly stay away
If that doesn't sound like a lot, consider how few online spaces today can claim even one of the above, let alone all...

I think ASR is part of a growing and very positive movement in the audio world. Maybe someday other sectors of commerce and society at large will follow suit. We can dream...

I think forums are still the best place, Reddit and DC are too instant.

so what are the bots doing?

There have been occasional spammers who try to hide their spam by quoting posts and editing the quoted post to include hidden spam links.

There have been occasional spammers that are obvious with no attempt to hide their spam.

But mostly, I have reported - and the mods have deleted - literally hundreds of profiles that are created for the sole purpose of advertising a business, usually a casino/online betting site, and usually from Vietnam.
