Improving ASR as a member/moderator

OTOH, when you treat members like adults, they will act like adults.
Unfortunately, that is definitely not the case in my experience.

In any case, thanks for taking on the thankless task of herding these ASR cats RickS!

Thanks Rick!

This is a nice place to "hang out" and the very-little spam that I see disappears quickly.

My experience with on line groups goes back to BBS, IRC, USENET, et al. This is among the most civilized groups I've belonged to. I can't tell if it's due to the moderators or the membership at large but I'm happy to follow my interest in audio in an environment that's focused on audio rather than ego. Brian Aldiss wrote a generation ship novel many years ago where a standard greeting was: "Expansion to your ego," and the ritual response was, "At your expense." Fortunately we don't have much of that here.

We are just moderator friends, and my wife is the jealous type.

If Thomas shows at our house looking too friendly, could end up neutered!
Means, Puppeteer Doge meme is exactly what your wife would imagine if she knew about it. I was joking and didn't expect to be *this* right. ;)

Thanks @RickS! Your efforts are appreciated!

@RickS , you're doing a great job.

I will miss @AdamG, @BDWoody, and @Jimbob54. Haven't seen them on the forum for some time now.

Thanks, as far as I know @Jimbob54 is still around. None of them have been banned and so they are still technically members.

For those who may not be aware, there are several types of bans: reply bans, forum bans, and spam bans. A spam ban is the most aggressive and can only be applied during the initial member trial period. A spam bans wipes the member and any posts entirely from the forum. Forum bans are just what they seem and can be temporary or permanent. There is also an automated 2-week temporary ban for anyone who is issued 5 warning points or more. Finally, reply bans are thread-specific and can be temporary or permanent as well.

Permanent bans are unusual and are usually only issued for extreme and/or repeat rule violations. They are also issued if a member requests to leave. Beyond a permanent bans are deleted members. Deleted members additionally remove the account name from the forum and assign a random user id to the posts. ASR moderators can issue bans, but only admins can delete member accounts.

There’s also permanent thread bans as I have found out/experienced for pointing out/reporting hateful/misogynistic comments regarding greta thunberg on the humour thread a couple of years ago, I merely pointed out that I found “insert names of 3 political figures here” much more damaging to democracy

Yes, the thread bans are the same as reply bans.

I did not issue any of your bans and will not discuss publicly either. PM me if you want me to review.

Nah it’s cool Rick, I have no desire for involvement in the thread

My experience is that ASR is simply excellent: educational, polite, lots of brainiacs. Once in a while there are threads which wander and some which pose questions for which the poster has already reached a conclusion but
still tolerant of those who have not received the posters truth.

Thank you moderators past and current.

@RickS,

I appreciate your work and your current 'descriptor' of 'Striving For Balance'. The descriptor and your job as moderator reminds me of 'The Flying Wallendas':

Non of this is real ! The people are fictions created from fractions of the actual physical interaction and social involvement one really needs, the scaffolding that real friendship building requires is missing along with just about everything required .
Everything here is real, Thomas, unless an AI or a bot responds. Even in earlier times, pen friendships could and in many cases did develop into wider friendships.
It is only the form of communication that is somewhat limited, but it can also be an opportunity for understanding, because perhaps you meet mentally on a level that would be very difficult in direct communication.

I could hardly share these thoughts in real time with a native English or American speaker, because my English skills are too limited for that.

Nevertheless, my thoughts are of course the thoughts of a real person, even if thoughts per se are fleeting.

Some acquaintances that began virtually in forums have grown into "real" friendships, including mine, which is hardly surprising as we share the same interests.
