What is the purpose of the pavement slab?

To bring it up by another 2 inches or so.

But since the width of the upper frame matches the width of the speakers so well, it might be nicer to put the slab below the stands... Sometimes one doesn´t see the forest for the trees ^^

Don't use something ugly. Visual aesthetics are important also.

In the past I used some solid stone columns which you can buy at outdoor decoration stores for reasonable prices, something like these:

Works great as a speaker stand. Heavy and didn't cost much.
