Hi,
From the video it seems that unfortunately Shanling persists closing it's Android system and allows only their "certified" apps .
At least that is what I understood from what the guy with a big accent explains in the video.
The problem is, Shanling does not maintain them.
It is the editor of the app who does : Tidal, Qobuz (that name was not mentioned... despite the fact that it is the one most compatible with older systems)...
And if an app changes and is not compatible with the Android version used, you're screwed... because Shanling will not be able to fix it (because of either technical limitations or limited knowledge of their so called "software team").
Look at the web reports and how many people complain that after one year or two, tidal, Amazon or other services do not work anymore... The most recent one is that Tidal does not work properly on the Shanling M8 DAP which used to be Shanling's flagship up to 2/3 years ago. What's the answer to those complains ? "Our software team has not been able to solve the problem". When amateur developers of UAPP or Bubble UPnP offer seamless integration of Tidal from their own app with Android 7 ! So they just claim an amateur part time developer is more skilled than their whole team. At least,nt hey're honest).
I already asked them why they would do something like that (not allowing to install third party apps) and the answer was the worst BS ever.
They claim it is to preserve sound qualities ! Imagine...
In other words, they're ow DAP's that they sell for 2K+€ are not sound orientended as they allow to install thrid party apps ?
In other words, brands like Fiio do not give a s*** about soiund quality because they allow to install third party apps ?
When I said this, answer was : "It is to preserve system integrity and do not have bricked devices". Really ? I've been more or less an Android developper for some time as a hobby. ANY manufacturer allows you to boot your phone in Recovery mode and to reinitialise it to factory settings. Why not allow the same solution ?
BUT from the video there is one good thing. The device has obviously been demoed with a Moondrop Venus or Para headphone. That is a weird choice because those headphones are SUPER demanding ones. I had one for several weeks and I had to push my headphone amp to 80/120 in High gain mode where the SOny MDR-Z1R or even the DCA Aeon Closed would produce enough sound in low gain at 70/120 (Sony) or in medium gain mode at 60/120 (DCA), not to mention the AUstrian Audio Hi-X 60 that produces sound in low gain at 40/120.
In other words, demoing the headphone amp with such a headphone should mean that the headphone amp si pretty decent whichj is a good thing.
To sum it all up :
- if this allows to install my own apps, I'd go for it without hesitation ;
- if it does not, NEVER in my life will I EVER buy anything that forces me to use Eddict.
And as a conclusion, I'd like to mention that, ALL streamers that I had (pretty much a lot of them) all came with manufacturer's apps. ALL those manufacturer's app are the porrest thing I've ever saw, even when the "specialized reviewers" praised them so much (eyes on Bluesound Note). It looks like the reviewers never used a third party app like Emby, BubbleUPnP, Hi-Fi cast or, the best of the bests, Symfonium... If they did, they'd know about the plague those manufacturer's apprepresent. The apps from Blusound, Liin, Lumin, NAD, NAIM... crippled. With on exception : the software from Rose. But the new series does not have headphone amps anymore :-(
Unless you need the headphone amp, I'd go for an eversolo. If you need the headphone amp maybe something like the matrix mini I Pro 4 would be something to consider ?
