I would like to measure my elderly AB amp (cannot find any tests online) and looking for some advice on cost optimal, used gear plus software (MacOS or Windows) needed. Not an EE but I use to get tinkering done. Is there anything that could be recommended well away from an AP or similar top notch stuff?

If you want something out of the box that will just work, the QuantAsylum gear is good value for money.
By the way, you will need dummy loads to measure a power amplifier.
