I have seen photos of the new interior of the Notre Dame. They have modernised it! How sad, it looks as if Notre Dame will never be the same again for future visitors.

I think the French should be immensely proud of what has been achieved from what seemed like an impossible task. That the cathedral is open again to visitors is a miracle.

From the photos I've seen, it's a massive improvement. It's now closer to the way it would have looked to the builders rather than the dark, dismal way it was after centuries of grime and candle soot. A credit to the French and their way of getting stuff done. If it had been Westminster Abbey that had burnt down, we'd still be arguing 5 years later in committees over what colour the seats should be.

The choice of Pdt Macron was to rebuild Notre Dame roof and church arrow with lead plates, as originally.
But lead metal is a very dangerous poison.
During Notre Dame fire, a lot of lead dust spreads in the air all around.

The only down side I see is they had to invite the President elect to the reopening

Absolutely.
Not that different than the careful cleaning of centuries-old paintings.
Stuff gets a little grungy after a millennium or so, especially after that whole industrial revolution thing and all. ;)

One is reminded of Sainte-Chapelle (also Gothic, and also in France), the interior of which (assuming that my college art history text - and professor* - are to be believed) is relatively authentically restored to "original" conditions.

Yep - the restoration of an ancient monument is highly political ?

We must know different French people....

And now for something completely different:
