Polk R500 worthy upgrade to Elac DBR62?

Yeah, both models that incorporate the ring tweeter will have beaming.. Beaming causes the soundstage to be less identifiable at certain frequencies.. Some instruments/ songs will sound fine , others not so much.... Drums/ cymbals fall into this category....

Yes it will
Preference score: 6.2 and F10/F3 dB: 33/51 Hz

PS: 5.3 and F10/F3 dB: 40/57 Hz
You got the wrong Elac. The preference score for the DBR62 is 5.7 and 7.8 with subwoofer

I have both the DBR62 and the R200 (not 500). They are in different rooms. I also use the 62s outside regularly.

They are both great, but the Polk 200s are tighter and seem flatter and.... crisper? The Elacs are great too but they are fuller and have a fat? sound. The polk 200s need a sub - not sure about the 500s. The Elacs stand on their own better but the polks have a nicer presentation that needs a sub.

how does the soundstage compare?

They both are good. But they are in very different rooms. The polks are definitely tighter and more precise. But they need a sub if your serious about music. If you can't have a sub, using them for HT, then the DBRs will probably make you happier. Bad recordings can sound muddy or muffled. Good recordings sound great. That said, I'm of the opinion that we can adapt to sound and too much is made about minute differences and A-B comparisons. I always use cheap special ear plugs at every music concert. After a few minutes your brain (my brain anyway) adjusts so that the music usually sounds great (unless the set up or mixing is bad - which happens) and it's enjoyable. Even with my ears stuffed with plugs. The brain abides :)
