To bad it’s only 6,5”. Would have liked 7 or 8”.And price details known yet?

Also like like there is some directivity error between 4 and 8 kHz.

Overall response is smooth though:

If I saw correctly in the presentation video, someone from Genelec wrote in te the chat something like 2800 EUR +taxes per speaker wich seems way off. Maybe was a typo...

Since it’s basically an upgraded 8340 with a stand, that seems excessive. A pair of 8340’s is about € 2400.

Too bad it is a copy of the 8340, with the 3/4'' tweeter and the 6.5'' woofer weird match.
It really shows in the launch video: the designer really doesn’t have a lot to say except that it’s kinda round like just about all products they sold for the last two decades. Nothing on why this design is closed or what design nuances are different vs a near field monitor. Seems like a wasted opportunity.

Also, it’s 2021: where is the streaming and smartphone apps?

I wonder if the speaker cabinet is identical to the OG 6040a? probably did not make fiscal sense for them to change the tooling used from the original hence the limited ability for a deeper update/redesign

Nope, the 6040A had a 7” woofer. The R is only 6.5”.

Regarding price: the 6040A were about 7000 USD for the pair, in current money that would be around 8500 USD

Somehow the 2800 EUR a pop sounds likely given those numbers. That’s about the same price as an 8341.

Have to say this seems like a really uninteresting launch from Genelec :/

Things I'd like to see from them:
  • Smaller, cheaper W371A with a less blocky cabinet design(12" + 10"? 4x8"?).
  • Updated older 8000-series speakers with better woofers and Class D amplification.
  • Expansion of the "smart IP" line that allows streaming audio over network, and consumer-friendly streaming app support for this line.
  • WiFi GLM(both included in newer speakers and via a small module that can be plugged into older ones).
  • Optional, multi-sub bass management system similar to Dirac Bass Control.

And there is really no contest between these and 8341. You only get the floor stand but loose so much more in terms of quality compared with the coax

Looking at the graph, the bass roll-off slope is different.
The 6040R is described as a sealed enclosure, and has a bandwidth similar to that of the 8340, a bass reflex type.
It seems similar to the recent trend of using DSP to increase bass. Had there ever been a closed speaker from Generec?
Considering the rolloff starting point, a 12dB rolloff would result in a very extended bass response in a moderately sized room.

The original 6040A was also closed. Other than that I don't know of any of the small-ish speakers without reflex.
The closed box is a bit of a worry regarding MaxSPL below 100 Hz:

This is Max SPL curve of a similar 6.5" woofer (in this case a Peerless HDS), Blue is closed, green is the same woofer, but in a reflex configuration. The closed box looses about 10dB of maximum output at 50 Hz. The closed box is constrained to about 94 dB at this point. So I'm guessing the Genelec will do some aggressive limiting at higher SPL's, and basically will not be very usable without a sub if you like to play a little ouder.
