How many subs are you using and how big are they?

I've been wondering what is the average sub size around here and the number of subs used in each system.
This is my dream sub;)

Got one 12" sealed subwoofer in a corner behind me for LFE, and a pair of 10" dual opposed DIY subs (2 boxes with 2 10" drivers each) in front as mid-bass modules of sorts to try and fill in gaps that I can't fix through speaker placement.

All in all I have 8 subwoofers divided inbetween two systems. I always wonder if I should ever connect all of them to the one system but it seems too many subwoofers can cause more problems than it could fix.

2 SVS SB-1000
2 DIY 12 inch DCS 305-4 Dayton with the same SVS plate amp with a slighlty larger cabinet, similar driver and motor structure.
2 RSS315 HO Dayton in a 60 LItre cabinet, this is my favourite
2 8 inch DSC205-4 Dayton

My wide dispersion 3 way speakers are connected to 2 SVS (front) and the 2 DIY DCS 305 (back sides)

The 2 RSS315 and the 2 8 inch is connected to my controlled directivity horn with 15 inch midbass drivers.

Two totally different types of bass that can't be quantified both good in different ways.

I was using 2x JBL 4281F behind projector screen subs but changed to 4x in-wall JBL SSW-3 when switched to flat-screen TV, 2x on each side of the TV and two in the side walls.

15"*2 + 12"*2 custom built for the room.

I should note all custom DSP control. The 12" I don't push below 25hz. They are for music. The 15" go deeper for effects.

I also have a lot of room treatment to keep necessary response corrections minimal.

A 50" sub would be impractical for the vast majority of installations - but sure would get a lot of attention. I use eight 18" Seaton F18's - two in each of the front two corners and 4 more along the back wall. No such thing as too much woofage!!
Wow!... Eight subs in one room. Dayum... presumably you don't have anyone in adjoining bedrooms... and/or neighbours?

Not knowing your actual room dimensions, that sure seems like a lot of woofage per square meter
(of roomage).
Cool.

What is the total surface of 8X18 inch subs?

2 X Dayton Audio SUB-1500
For now.
Much better subs (SVS, HSU, Rythmik, etc) will be added soon, but both SUB-1500 will remain in the system regardless,; there is never enough subwoofage :D

The setup may seem extravagant but when those 8 subwoofers are generating the 115dB THX level at 20Hz each drive unit’s cone is moving around 6mm. Loud and low is not easy.

8 x 18" subs have the approximate surface area of a single 50.9" driver, sqrt(8) * 18".

A = pi * R^2 (R = radius, 1/2 the diameter) thus for N drivers all of diameter D ( = 2 * R) the net area is sqrt(N) * D.

I am using 4 x Rythimk F12 (12" diameter) subs in the mdeia room, and another in the family room.

Note larger diameter does not necessarily equate to lower frequency response or greater output.

2 x 10” Velodyne Impact 10 subwoofers.

I had a great opportunity and jumped at it. I place both my subs one on each side, right beside the front speakers snd cross them @ 100hz.

Both subs for $150. Couldn’t be happier!

True but you must have large diameter in order to be able to create high SPL at low frequency.

Right now have a single 18-in Rhythmik in a 14 x 25 x 9 ft room. For me, there’s plenty of bass, even for Die Hard and the like. Watched 15:17 to Paris the other night, and the walls and hangings rattled some on occasion. But everyone says more is better, so planning to add a second at some point, just to see.

In the process of building my room, but the subs on-hand and/or paid for in full include:

8 x 18" drivers (JBL 2269s located in the four corners of the room) for coverage >20-30HZ

4 x 24" (SI IB-24s located in the rear of the room in an infinite baffle) for coverage below <20-30HZ

Hoping to get all the benefits of pro-driver impact and tight bass above 30HZ with even in-room frequency response, combined with the infrasonic impact of the big 24s.
