One of my Genelec 8020D's died after 3.5 years. It was fed by Magni Heresy and died when I accidentally switched the Heresy off and on very quickly. I'm not an electrical engineer, but I wonder if the quick switching caused a voltage spike or something else that destroyed the speaker. Has anything like this happened to anybody here?
I took the speaker to a guy who repairs audio equipment, but he said he would have to order parts and after including labor cost I would be better off buying a new one ($550 USD). Any advice on what I should do now? If I try to sell the broken speaker, how much would it be worth?

I would reach out to Genelec and see what they say. I would expect professional gear to have plenty of protection circuitry, but even pro stuff can fail. There is luck of the draw.

Sadly, the possibility amp failure in powered speakers is one of their negative points. I have had to replace electrolytic capacitors in a couple of powered subs in the past. There is generally no provision for cooling air circulation inside of these speakers and this compounded by the use of electrolytics with low (85deg) temperature ratings often results in failure. Some air circulation and/or the use of 105deg capacitors would go a long way to improving reliability. You might check for leaking or bulging caps that if found can be replaced with 105deg caps from DigiKey or Mouser.
