Why is it that most American women singers need to scream when they sing?
They may start low but then they start whaling…
Big lungs? ;)

Actually I'm more worried about the young European girls who obviously are asthmatic or have fatique syndrome. Or even worse, are still waiting for puberty and voice change.

You guys are bringing back lots of memories! I've followed Teresa Salgueiro from the very first CDs that Madredeus released through to her latest solo efforts, and I've bought practically all of those CDs over the years. She started when she was quite young, and now her voice has matured now to a steely burnished gold that she is capable of that is just dazzling. She has certainly spread her wings since going solo. I also bought three Japan-released CDs of Anna Kolchina's, and several Mina "best of" CDs. In fact, I have CDs of the majority the singers listed in this thread prior to about two years ago when my CD buying really tapered down, but sadly most of the CDs are stuck in storage boxes where I can't access them to rip them to FLAC :(. Oh, well, I guess they're all available via streaming services now.

"La Serena" Teresa's collaboration with the Lusitania Ensemble is one of my favorite albums of hers; the chamber ensemble accompaniment is superfine. Every track on the album is excellent, but a couple of my favorites are the first track "La Serena", and "Amanha". Unfortunately, the single-track YT video of "La Serena" is "age-restricted" (no idea why), so I am listing the YT video of the entire album.
Teresa also has a nice delicate version of "Vuelvo Al Sur" in a YT video, which is another song I am fond of, but for this song I prefer Estrella Morente's sultrier more languorous approach.

I'm not a big fan of vibrato on female vocals particularly like Beth Hart. Don't get me wrong she is an awesome female vocalist but compared to say Judy Garland the difference is night and day. I came across a band called Anathema. I believe they are Irish anyway the female vocalist has a stunning voice and a vibrato that equals Judy. I've not listened to all this bands stuff in fact very little but the live album "A Sort of Homecoming" is a good example.

Oh man, what happened? How come they're inaccessible?

I honestly love her voice. I have heaps of Madredeus and solo albums on CD. But there's something about this song. When I first heard it, i didn't even pick up on the theme, the musical phrase that is repeating, but I let it play for some time and in one moment... It just came together and I saw the beginning and the end... That was it! I was done.

Please recommend something recent of hers where one could best detect the vocal qualities you speak of.

@Seeker-Smith Same here. Nothing in particular to object, but the way it all comes together... I don't enjoy it. I also see a lot of youg female vocals jump only to quickly to imitate some vocal feature of the great divas. It's more like impersonating than expressing. Like, yesterday she wasn't even singing and she was just going around saying she really likes to sing and then some friends invite her to sing a few tunes in a bar, she puts a lot of tension in her throat and think they're the next Nina Simone or something.

To get back on topic (Sorry)! The Lady Perfectionist:

Agreed. O Paraiso is a beautiful song!
The Lady Perfectionist:
Elis is one of the most elegant in her singing.

The best example of what I mean is the first song on the album "La Serena" that I linked to in my previous post. It is the title track "La Serena", a sephardic song if I remember correctly from the liner notes; it is a brief song, but I find it a perfect gem. Apart from its somewhat unusual structure which is attractive, Teresa's voice in that song is mesmerizing when I crank up the volume. In the higher notes, her voice has what I feel as a "steely" quality, and overall the richness of her voice has increased, giving me that impression of "burnished gold". A contrast to the soft voice she brings to the second link, to the song "Amanha" in my previous post.

Other songs that I can recall with that steely quality, though perhaps to a lesser extent than La Serena are Horizonte and O Vento from the album O Horizonte. I guess my hearing may just be sensitive to the particular tone range of these songs, but it seems her voice has a little more ping when she wants to use it than in her youth. More of a bite than a ping, really, with a smooth firm tone.
