This is still pretty much the way that directions work in much of Vermont (and parts of New Hampshire, too). GPS isn't very useful around here anyway because the direction algorithms or whatever don't do a very good job of differentiating between real roads and what are known 'round here, at least, as "Class 6" roads. Class 6 roads -- are not for regular, licensed on-road vehicles. They can be difficult to hike.
At the risk of offending some, at least they'd only have to do it once. Some of them probably wouldn't even have to use their hands...
